Game Cube/PS2 Mod Chip Question

Hey guys, last console I owned was a SuperNes way back in the day. I was looking at getting a Game Cube or PS2 as they are cheap and there are a myriad of games available for them.

Just wondering which one would be the better buy (in terms of quality of games out there) and what would be the best mod chip to get for it. I looked at a few websites and there are a ton of modchips ranging from $9-70 and I have no idea what I am looking for.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Pretty general question and I could answer with a huge response.  But it would probably be more useful to do research on the forums at a great site like Maxconsole: http://www.maxconsole.net.  They have info about all consoles and mod chips.  Personally, I have both PS2 and Gamecube modded with a DMS4 and a Qoob Pro, respectively.

I just ordered a Qoob Pro (is that pronounced like 'cube'?) and it hasn't come in yet.

If you don't get one by the time it comes in, I'll be sure to let you know.

This is a good site for GC: http://modthatcube.pxn-os.com/

Here's a comparison chart too: http://modthatcube.pxn-os.com/content/bcompare.htm

It says that Qoob Pro is $60 but I ordered mine for $50 and it appears to be the best one.

Both are awesome systems you won't regret going one way or another.

There are plenty of titles that have been released for both consoles.

What you have to look at are the exclusives for each one.

Try going to cube.ign.com and ps2.ign.com, at the review section, you can list game reviews by score, from top to low. Take a look at all 9's 8's and 7's for both consoles, you'll get a pretty good idea of what to expect.

As a general rule though, on the gamecube you have fewer good exclusives, but these are pretty damn awesome games, like Zeldas, Mario Sunsinhe, Luigi Mansion, the Mario Party games, F-Zero, Resident Evil 0 and 1 (and RE 4 is better quality than PS2 version), Metroid 1 and 2, some other stuff.

On the PS2 side you have some more "adult wannabe" exclusives like Devil May Cry and Silent Hill series, or Fatal Frame, and Metal Gear series (awesome really!).

What is a major strenght of the PS2 are RPG games, there are a LOT of very good stuff like Final Fantasy series, lots of Tales games (against just one for gamecube), and many others.

You see, it's really difficult to pick just one system, but either way you will have a lot of fun!

Oh and the Gamecube has a better quality image and power overall...

Good luck!!!!!

Right on guys, I appreciate the responses. I found a guy selling his GC, 4 controllers, expansion cards and 7 games for $80CAD so I bought it. Figured I can't beat that price.

I'll look into the Qoob Pro as well, thanks again guys.

Thanks a lot glasonator, I'm thinkinf of modding my cube too(got it on lunch day a few years back) and I was looking myself for a solution.
That qoob pro looks really good.
From the site you've listed it's not clear wether it's a good idea to mod the case too, in order to make standard side dvds fit.
And then how easy is it to come across backups. I guess all I need would be a good irc channel, and I will have to keep looking for it.
I guess I'm gonna get this mod chip, I like to take apart my systems anyway !
Cheers.

You don't need to make your cube run normal size dvds. As soon as I had mine modded I found out the best mini-dvd media for it (bought one or two of each brand for tests) and then I went back to the store and got myself like 60 of the same brand so I wouldn't have problem finding the same brand/series again. Never had any reading problems since.

Also, try googling for "Joh GC"

It seems worth it to me because regular DVDs are much cheaper. As for back-ups, you can just make your own with Qoob Pro, I believe (the ol' BlockBuster trick... oh man I'm so evil). As for actually downloading them, torrents are the best, easiest, and most dangerous way to go. Just Google 'torrents' and you'll probably find some. I know a site with like 400 but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links on this site.

Got my qoob PRO a few days ago and I'm soldering it in now. I'll be sure to tell you how it goes.

why is it a pain in the butt? I heard its quite easy to do if you get it with the replacement tray made for the slidecard  :(

I used a slidecard for a year or so. Perfectly ok. I've upgraded to a harddrive  (with help of the swap magic to transfer a save to my memory card) since then and without a modchip. I'd say go harddrive all the way.

ive been using swapmagic 1 for over 5 years & been using it to boot my downloaded copys of HD advance, HD loader, xploder, action replay, game shark & a newer version of swapmagic 3.1 plus over 350 game the best £11 ive ever spent
ive got a maxtor diamondmax 10 200GB in mine but ive killed 2 HDs in it in the last few years swapping isos over so i dont do it so much anymore
