Is it just me or are all RPG's "semi-medieval" in setting? Final Fantasy (not all), Golden Sun, etc. What's wrong with futurisctic RPGs like the SUPERB Phantasy Star IV : End of the Millenium or Star Ocean?

What's your take on why futuristic RPGs are less common?

I prefer my RPG settings in the medieval times with fantastical dragons, and airships, and magic and sorcery.

I dunno, I just love the atmosphere it creates.

Case in point: I only spent 4 hours playing Final Fantasy 8 till I finally lost interest, yet i've beaten Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (US Versions), more than once.

I just couldn't get into it as much.

me too.  Same goes for mmorpg's.  I couldn't get into EVE, but I really love FFXI and WoW.

When it comes to reading, I like sci-fi (but I'm picky about which ones) as much as fantasy, but for games, I prefer mages, swords, maybe the occasional old-fashioned firearm (muskets, etc..).. not laser guns and futuristic stuff.

I did really like Star Ocean on PS2 though (can't remember the title, but it rocked)

I don't get it. I like both, you see, but I kinda lost interest on medieval themes because almost ALL RPG's have that setting. But there's something cool about for example, Phantasy Star IV and the whole travelling between planets and fixing parts as upgrades for android party members. But since most people dig medieval settings, the game developers seem to have their market pretty well cornered. Oh well.

Yeah, makes sense, don't it?  The demand is a bit more positive one way, so developers tend to stick with a working formula.

It does suck.

But I forgot to mention, Xenogears (for the original playstation), easily THE best RPG that I've ever played.  It contains mechas, some airships, and a mixture of both medieval type setting, and futuristic setup.

I highly recommend this one.  I love the Final Fantasy series, but Xenogears was the one that stands out the most.
