I have a PSP and a DSLite. I sold my PSP because it got boring.
DS Lite Onyx Black
Supercard Lite
Nintendo Wii (US)
PSP (Metal Gear PO Limited Edition)

Quotedidn't find a PSP adventure game to steal my heart yet...
Then try "YS: The Ark of Napishtim" its one of the best games I've played and I barely even like RPG's, but this one I almost beat! It is awesome! :D

I haven't found an awesome online game for the PSP, at least not as good as MP:H DS online... have you?

My take on DS vs PSP is this:

DS: Low cost for system, games, addons.  With supercard, it becomes a multimedia platform thanks to Moonshell (use BatchDPG of course), a PDA with the help of DSOrganize, a remote PC with DS2Win (or is it Win2DS?), an email client with NDS Mail (or whatever it's called),a web browser with Opera (more on that later), and more that I'm probably just not thinking of.

Regards Opera vs PSP browser, the PSP browser is superior in speed and compatibility, but the DS browser has the ultimate trump card: touchscreen input.  If you've ever fumbled around trying to type a text message with a cell phone, just try to imagine the horror it must be if you want to type something using just arrow keys or whatever.  Can you imagine making a forum post of this length?  It would take literally hours!!!  Makes my brain hurt just thinking about it!

PSP: Highest price for console, games, addons, and piece-of-crap UMD movies.  Requires proprietary memory stick that you can use ONLY for PSP or other high-cost sony junk, whereas with DS you can get a flash card if you want no extra memory cards, or an adapter like supercard for virtually any type of modern CF/SD card.  PSP graphics are unrivalled in a handheld, but so are the loading times - in a very, very bad way.  I've never personally used a PSP, but based on Gamespot's loading time comparison article, I know that some PSP titles take over a minute per loading phase, while most other games can take between 30-45 seconds as a result of the crappy low-speed UMD drive.  Compare that to a DS's 0-1 second loading for virtually anything.  PSP battery life is pathetic, and AFAIK there's no way to extend it like you can on a DS.  A DS lite can have as many as 16 hours of battery life on its lowest brightness setting, or even more if you're playing GBA games!  Even at the highest brightness setting, a DS Lite outlasts the PSP in any scenario.

PSP has a low original to port ratio.  There's like one original game for every 5 quick and dirty ports made, and even those "original" games are ones that are variations on things you've already done if you're much of a PC or console gamer.  PSP owners will say "well there's liberty city stories, that's an original game and it's great"... well except that it's just more of the same stuff you've been doing for the last how many years?  The DS actually has completely original games as well as the obligatory not-so-wonderful ports.  Phoenix Wright (and soon PW2), Elite Beat Agents, Metroid Prime Hunters, New Super Mario Bros, Yoshi's Island DS, Mario Kart DS, Final Fantasy III, Advance Wars DS, Castlevania DoS and soon PoR, Kirby Canvas Curse and the other new Kirby game coming soon, Meteos, Tetris DS, Trauma Center, Sonic Rush, Clubhouse Games, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Age of Empires: AoK, Megaman ZX, Starfox Command, Brain Age, Mario vs Donkey Kong 2, Ultimate Spider-Man, MechAssault: Phantom War... These are the "Must Own" DS games.  Many of them have single-cart multiplayer or Wifi connection, and there are a TON of great JAP-only games that haven't been translated yet, not to mention the huge number of DS games that are in development.  Can anyone give a similar list of AAA titles for the PSP?  Those ones I just listed, virtually anyone with a DS will tell you that they're the ones to get.  Everyone can enjoy them.  There are lots more that are mostly for niche audiences... for instance, Star Trek Tactical Assault is IMO an enjoyable game since I have played the PC "Starfleet Command" games.  Contact, Trace Memory, Lost in Blue, WarioWare, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, MP Pinball, and lots of others are other good but rather "niche" games that aren't everyone's cup of tea but which many enjoy.  And virtually all of them would be impossible on the PSP because they make such brilliant use of the double screen/touch screen of the DS.

Finally, game developers are slowly beginning to abandon PSP because of mediocre sales and a small user base.  Nintendo has clearly got a massive upper hand in terms of number of users.  Many movie companies aren't even considering the idea of UMD releases anymore since nobody in their right mind would buy them.  The PSP is just one more piece of proof that sony's strategy of throwing as much technology into a box as possible just isn't winning the battle.  The PS2 only succeeded because it was first to market and got a huge install base - and without the advantage the PS2 continues to give Sony, they'd be out of the gaming business for good.  The 'Cube is better technically and aesthetically most every way, and the Xbox doubly so, as much as I hate to admit it.

In summary: If you buy a PSP, you are investing in a dying product from a dying division of a dying company.  If you buy a DS Lite, Supercard Micro, and a 1 or 2 gig memory card, you are investing in a platform that will be around as long as the GBA has been, and probably longer.  You cannot imagine how cool it is to know that you've got 30 games you love and 20 TV shows to watch, all sitting in this sexy little white rectangle in your pocket.  8)

Long post! I read it all, and I have to agree.
They've stopped selling UMD movies at all the game stores near me, and they've been replaced with another rack of DS games and accessories. I also agree with you about the Xbox though, it is a pretty good console.

i dont give a $#@! about graphics personally, the only thing im interested in is the fun factor.

Altor: thats a nice post, but you only mentioned the good about the NDS, and the bad about the PSP

When making an argument you should go like this:
NDS: list good parts; list bad parts
PSP: list good parts; list bad parts

Theres alot left unsaid especially not mentioning the psp homebrew and other good parts about it. Don't come saying "haha but theres nothing good about the psp!1!!"... because there is!

remember: I have both and i defend both :)

I don't mean to be biased, just I don't really know very much about PSP and most of the things I hear tend to be negative.  Many of the positive things I hear are negated by the fact that I personally don't care for the thing that's so great.  Like, for instance... it's good for music and movies.  But its battery life is so prohibitively low that using it for either of these purposes seems silly.  Anyone with a job knows, you don't listen to music for 4 hours or whatever, and then have your MP3 player quit and be fine with that... it's stupid.  If you want music, it has to last the whole work day and hopefully on the trip to/from work as well.  So, on average, 9-10 hours would be ideal.  4 hours?  Bah.  No sense even trying.  Similarly with movies or TV shows... there's only two times I usually would like to watch TV: when I've just come home from a hard day of work and need to relax, of if I'm on a long trip.  PSP is fine for the first case, but why watch TV on your PSP when you can watch it on a real TV?  And in the second case, I guess 4 hours off a journey is OK, but I'd much prefer a longer life for things like cross country stuff or airplane/bus/train rides.

So, what does PSP really have going for it?  In my opinion, it's a powerhouse but without enough battery life to be satisfactory.  The excessive load times are absurd in this day and age.  If there was a way to underclock the PSP so that it was running at half or a quarter of its current speed, but still allowing for lower visual quality games or movie/music playback, the loading times were greatly reduced, and didn't require proprietary memory, I think it'd be a really ideal system that I'd be willing to pay good cash for.  Heck, even if I could find an unofficial battery expansion that would double or triple the battery life - regardless of if it was ugly as sin - I'd probably be willing to buy one.  The battery life is, IMO, the worst problem with the PSP, and the reason I would never be interested in buying one.

You hear that from homebrew-less PSP owners.
With homebrew your choices are greater than that of the NDS homebrew scene. 100% working SNES emu, a developing n64 emu, firmware hacks, overclocking, ISO playing, and way tons tons more.

Aggreed :D

Battery life seems to be your most hated part...
Check this out, and its not even "as ugly as sin"
4500mAH compared to the original 1800mAH...

heck: combine the 4500mAH external (above) to this and you have a powerhouse going with 13+ hours (compared to 4 hours)

convinced yet?
The PSP is not all you hear... its better with homebrew :D
Give it a chance! I love them both :)

Oh, good to see that the PSP at least has some unofficial battery packs.  I might consider buying one at some point then... if I can justify it to myself... I already spend a lot on electronics/gadets.

Perseid

I have both. I like my DS better but the PSP is a fine little machine too.

As far as the battery life it depends on what you're doing, because the big battery killer is the disc drive in it. Moving parts = bad for batteries. So if you are playing a UMD movie which is constantly accessing the drive, you're in for hard times. But if you're playing videos or MP3s off the memory stick the battery life goes way up because the drive is idle.

Everything else I could say about the PSP has already been said on this thread. :)

A bit fanboyish don't you think?  I've owned both the PSP and now the DS Lite.  All i have to say is both have their strong and weak points.  I've bought about $50 worth of addons for my DS Lite just so i can get mp3 and video playback.  The PSP is much better for this, and it includes a browser as well.  So while the PSP excels at media capabilities, its games do have long load times.  Where as with the DS Lite, you have almost no load times and touch screen capabilities as you pointed out.  But honestly, that was a very fanboyish post...

yes, but in the end he gave in to my persuasions 8)
at least he can be swayed, unlike some people in the DS scene that will throw up on PSP's (theres some of these types of people in all homebrew scenes)

remember: I have both, just dont get mad at me

Hi

first of all, you already bought a DS right?

So BE HAPPY!

You ALREADY bought the thing, Time machines HAVEN'T been invented, And the sun WON'T fall out of the sky.

You should think about you decisions before you choose, and once you choose, don't try to challenge your choice, be happy with it, and start thinking about your next choice. (whatever that may be.)

Now, the next thing to do, it seems to me, is to find out how to use your choice, if your regretting buying it because of what it can't do. Well here's a newsflash for you, the ds can do most of the things the psp can do.

The ds, like the psp, can...

Play movies (with moonshell. Use batch Dpg rather than Dpg tools)
Play music (with moonshell or DSorganise)
display pictures (with moonshell or DSorganise, only DSorganse can display animated gif's)
work as a file browser (with DSorganise)
work as a pda (with DSorganse)
Play games ( )
browser the web (with DSlinux which is text only, I reccomend waiting untill some good other homebrew browsers come out)

And if your still upset ONLY the DS can

Use a touch screen in it's games
Use a microphone in it's games
Make use of two screens in its games and applications,
Play classic style games.
Play THE BEST GAME EVER! NEW SUPER MARIO BROTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
