R4 first impressions

I just got my R4 this afternoon, and am still testing it. All testing done with a Sandisk 1GB TF card. First off, the box looks really professional. Included in the box is a case (where an R4 and an extra case is stored), a TF card reader an a CD.

The build quality is fantastic. High grade plastic is obviously used, and is EXACTLY the same size as a DS card. Nope, no processors sticking out or whatsoever. It slides in and out of the DS, just like a normal commercial game card.

The interface is quite good. When you switch your DS on, the R4 boots into a menu with 3 icons. The first is a Game icon, the second a Mediaplayer icon and the last a Boot Slot 2 icon. This menu is touch sensitive. When you select the first icon, you will be directed to a text-based file system. There, the names of files, games, etc are located at the top screen while the icons and details of the file are located at the touch screen. Beside the rom names are their file sizes. When you select the second icon, you will be directed to a built-in Moon Shell, equipped with the default skin. When you select the third icon... well, pretty much self - explanatory.

Now, on for the games and homebrew. When you select a game (clean rom), a message pops up asking if you would like to create a save file for it. You can select either "Yes", "Cancel", or "Ignore". Very convenient. I've tested 2 games so far: Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. The intro movies ran very smoothly and well.

For homebrew, the support is relatively good. I tested the following:
Beup (no works)
DSOrganize 2.3 Blue + Gray versions (no works)
CheckNDS (Works)
Lovelite (Works)
DSLiveWeather (Works but cannot save information)
LCDTester (Works)
A Touch Of War (Works)
Twin Isles (Works)

You can only use homebrew files with .nds extentions. (Pretty obvious, but yeah). Overall, it is a good card. I have yet to test more games. Oh, and you need not select the save file or memory card speed. These are all auto detected.

Note:
Included in the CD is a save file converter (converting Supercard, M3, G6 saves into R4 save files), a rom trimmer, a manual (in .pdf and MS word), DPG tools 12 and skins.
0591 - DS Web Browser (patched) gave me white screens. I have yet to find a solution.
The R4 comes in white with a spare black case.

EDIT: The official site is www.r4ds.com (select English at the top right hand corner)
Like the SCDS, the R4 does not require you to respond to the health warning screen and boots straight to the R4 menu.
I finally got the DS Web Browser to work. It has to be patched via the Opera Web Browser patch with a slot 2 (M3/SC) flash cart to work.

Can anyone tell me how to post pictures in my post? I could take a couple of pictures of anything you request if you want.  8)

Thanks for the R4 evaluation.

You can upload your pictures to ImageSHack or PhotoBucket and then add links to your post like this . . .

So you don't need a slot 2 to run Opera web browser?

jbullfrog

I wish that were the case, but sinkhead told me you need a slot2

If only they could get opera running on a slot-1 device by itself!

It has built in RAM, so theoretically it IS possible.

Alos, I'm waiting for ewin 3 RAM expansion pack news
M3 Simply
Onyx Black DS lite
1 GB Japanese Kingston microSD

sonicwind

its pretty much not. theres no way you can fit the amount of ram you had in a slot 2 into a slot 1.

R4=M3. Same hardware.

SC=X9. Same hardware.

Unfortunately, its looking like SC might've picked the wrong package this time, and the loyal SC fans got pooped on. Hope they can get it straightened out.

PharaohsVizier

O PSHHHH, every other slot 1 can do that...  It sounded like he ran it without a slot 2.

Still, looks like an amazing cart.

sneef

O RLY?  did you inspect the hardware?
X9 and SCDS are NOT the same hardware, and I wish people would stop spreading that rumour.  The PCB's are not the same.  they both have an Actel chip, and they both have a microSD slot.  that does not make them the "same hardware".

as for R4=M3, I have no idea, as I haven't seen any pics of the M3 board, and I doubt many people have.

Here's to clear your doubts about cards being made "from the same factory"

And sorry, yes, I ran the Opera patched with a SC miniSD. So far, it's pretty much impossible to run the opera web browser without a slot 2 or ram pack.

Aw man, I ordered the SCDS and it has a battery in it... what happens if the battery runs out of juice?!?

The R4 looks too simple... why is there no chips on one side of the PCB? :O

SynGamer

Nice, no mentioning of any flaws on the R4DS...this s good news :)
