Its a quick way to produce a custom processor without going to the expense of getting a fab to produce it.

None of them appear to be using the latest IGLOO series which use much less power, I guess the DS has plenty of battery power to spare and the older ProASIC series is a bit cheaper.

Also a very cheap and easy way to rip off someone else's development work. Makes you wonder why all the slot 1 solutions look and operate in much the same way doesn't it?

The smarter designers will produce a PCB with less components on it, which gives me the impression that the R4/M3 is the latest design or the best design team.

Well, there are still *some* that operate in different manners (ie: DS-Link, DS-X, DS-Linker..etc), so some people are still being innovative :) I'll have to build up the nerve to crack open my DS-Link one day to see how this is layed out.

Do they both work with both nds/ndsl? ( im pretty sure they do, but on winsunx one says nds/ndsl and the other says ndsl and my cousin doesnt seem to believe it works for both which wouldnt make sense)

So the DS-Link is fairly low tech
Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD) appear to be cheaper and less complex than FPGAs

FPGAs range from tens of thousands to several millions of logic gates, allowing implementation of complex data processing devices
CPLDs have the equivalent of thousands to tens of thousands of logic gates, allowing implementation of moderately complicated data processing devices.

The CPLD has non-volatile onboard memory.

How do you open a DSLink? :\ Is it glued ot something? I was able to loosen the edges... but was afraid to put force on it because I don't want to break it.
 like cream soda...

My DSLink was screwed.

Thanks for the pics! Yep, looks simple, but neat. For the record, all three of my DS-Link's do NOT have a screw. How old is yours?

I can't remember, but i think the screws are under the label. I sold the card, so i can't check it up.

I buyed it in at the beginning of November.

Quote from: "PharaohsVizier"WOW....  that was informative.

So what you are saying is that this generation will not have download play support?

What about that video review?  The guy said download play works.  I don't see why he would lie.

Download play has worked with every game I've tried on my DS-Link.

It *looks* to me that the card is simply clipped together by four plastic pegs. I can find no area for a screw on any of my units...

Is there no DSLink download play list?

I don't think there are enough people (English speaking that is) that own one :) The DS-Link forums are all in Chinese unfortunately...and from the looks of it they have quite a few conversations going. Maybe one day an  English DS-Link forum will surface....and some motivated people to create some compatibility lists. I personally would love to, just no time.

Look, it doesn't do download play according to the GBAtemp review.

DS Single cart download play - Unflashed DS to unflashed DS > FAIL
DS Single cart download play - Flashed DS to unflashed DS > FAIL
DS Single cart download play - Unflashed DS to flashed DS > PASS

If it can, thats great news.  No need for me to go out and buy a DSX anymore.  :)
