EZV save system

Just thought I'd mention here that the way EZV handles saves is identical to a retail cart.

I mean that the save is loaded into the (presumably) 4mbit EEPROM when the game is loaded, and when you save in-game, it is written to EEPROM in the same way a commercial cart is saved.

I bring this up because when I had a DS-X, I assumed it would work the same way, but it obviously didn't, because when i tried to run REIN or the animal crossing map editor from slot-2, it didn't find a compatible save.

My SCDS also does not emulate the commercial cart's save system perfectly either, as I can't use the aforementioned tools on it.

My EZV holds the save in EEPROM like a commercial cart.  I can run REIN on the save, or the animal crossing map editor. (very useful when i neglect my town for a long time, and there are tons of weeds!)

I am curious to find out whether R4/M3 DS simply works this way or not.

Again, I am more and more impressed with EZV.  I can't believe a brand new product is this well developed.

Yes, but the downside is that it doesn't write the save to the microSD until you turn the DS off and then back on again.

Personally, I find it extremely annoying. You mentioned the ACWW editor, for example (which I use, too) - to use the editor you have to:

1. Turn the DS on, when the EZV loads it will write the save file from the the EEPROM to the microSD (from whatever you were playing last time the DS was on)
2. Launch ACWW, at which point the EZV will take a few seconds to load the ACWW save back into the EEPROM before it can launch the game.
3. Play the game, save, and power off.
4. Power the DS BACK ON, so the EZV writes the save from the EEPROM to the microSD.
5. Power the DS back off, so you can remove the microSD and use the save editor.

I don't know, I just find it really annoying to have to wait for the save to be written to the microSD every time I power on, and to have to power off, then on, then off again to do any save editing.

i meant the NDS homebrew animal crossing editor.  not the PC app.

I was just happy that you can access the eeprom of the EZV from within a homebrew app the  same way as a commercial cart.

what can get annoying is that the saves are persistent in the eeprom, so you have to be careful if you're doing any save editing on the PC side, or each time you load, the same eeprom save will overwrite your edited microSD save.  you have to run a different game first to make sure the save you are editing on the PC doesn't get overwritten by the save in eeprom.

Did you try this on the DS-Link as well? As far as I am aware, the DS-Link uses the same method of save backup and restore. It has a 4MB EEPROM that is used to save game, and upon reboot it writes this save out of the eeprom and onto the card. Load the game again, and it loads the .sav into eeprom and executes with the game. Some people may find this sort of save system annoying (dunno why, it takes seconds when you turn off and then back on), but the bottom line is that this will always be the MOST compatible method of saving. When in game, you are saving like the real cart!

it didnt' work on my dslink.. didn't work on SCDS either.. that's why i was impressed that it worked on EZV, and curious whether it was the same for R4/M3 Simply.  I'll find out on monday when my m3 simply arrives

May I ask where you got this card from?

I'll save you the suspense. ;)

The R4 reads/writes directly to and from the microSD card, which means there is no delay at power up and no delay when loading games. It also boots up in about half the time (the splash screen for the R4, if you could even call it that, is a "Loading" message that appears for less than 1 second, even on a slow microSD) ...

I have to say, I am VERY impressed with the R4 - it blows the EZV away (IMHO) ...

Then again, SC saves ARE fully compatible with EZV.

I use all of my old SC saves with the R4, too ... ;)

I don't know, I was just NOT impressed with my EZV straight from the first time I took it out of the box and used it. The R4 on the other hand was VERY impressive. Quick, compatible (no need for patching on ANY  games) and just overall a MUCH better product.

Just my opinion, of course - but I would NEVER recommend the EZV to any of my friends, I always recommend the R4, hands down.

I knew I was making a bit of a gamble when I bought my EZV, since there weren't reviews for the M3, R4, SC1, X9 or EZ5 yet (holy cow, every flashcart has a number), but I think I got a pretty good deal.  If R4 is really so high-quality and easier to use without patching, I'll probably recommend it instead to my less-geeky friends though.

"Oh, doesn't work?  Try running it through the patcher."
"Patcher??  WTF?  How do I turn the computer on?"

That's exactly why I recommend the R4. It's just easier to use. No patching to worry about, EVER - just drag and drop your games, and play. No waiting 5-10 seconds for large save files to load to EEPROM, no having to turn your DS off, back on, and then off again to edit saves on the PC, and now you can even soft-reset (L+R+A+B+X+Y) just like the Supercard had - it's just a much more elegant slot1 solution.

Not that the EZV is a bad slot1 device, it's great compared to my old Supercard SD - it's just not in the same league as the R4/M3 ... (IMHO)

i'm sorry, but if people can't run a rom through a simple GUI patcher, they probably can't even play a game in the first place. lol

that's not exactly true...i had to waste a whole afternoon to load games for my niece's newly bought ds lite and supercard lite. just because they thought drag and drop would work. and with no roms downloaded on their pc... :(

let's admit it, the instructions weren't exactly very forth-coming on the supercard package and being non computer savvy means google isn't in their daily vocabulary.

Well if you aren't a little familiar with computers you can just basically give up on pirating games and software.
