Oops  :shock:  I really didnt know... Thanks for taking it out for me.

Epoxy is often used for cheap mounting of components. It's very common to find in bootleg Famicom/NES clones for the mounting of the 'FOAC' (Famicom on a Chip). Perhaps it has a lower failure rate than the precision soldering involved in attaching a chip with so many densely packed pins as that one, with SMT no less. For a tiny company, every part they can't ship out cuts into their bottom line, I'm sure.

At any rate; rest assured-- it was confirmed by M3. The M3 and R4 are the same device. The factory where the devices are made sells the R4, and the M3 Team sells the same thing as R3. I suppose it was a deal made to reduce the costs the team had to pay to get them made-- to let the factory sell them independently.
