its not very practical, and i dont know how your going to get a hard drive to format as fat16

fls_27

you just need the proper software to format fat16.

I think I remember natrium saying IDE and compact flash are identical pin for pin, that you just have to wire every pin on the CF to the corresponding one on the hard drive. go ask natrium.

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do. Since the Supercard only understands FAT16 you'll be limited to 4GB. You can get CF cards bigger than that. And if you plan to take a regular IDE drive and stick it in your pocket, that drive isn't going to last a day. I think these guys making the pages are just making those mods for the sake of making them and for a learning experience. If that is also your goal, go for it. :) If not, don't expect this to be something you're going to take on the bus and use.

A similar idea was actually the very foundation for the Supercard.

The first device that could copy programs from a block device to RAM and then run them on a GBA was the GBACD, an ATA interface designed by Michal Lysek and Tobias Persson, two students from Halmstad University in Sweden. A program running on a microcontroller could read games from a hard drive or CD and run them. It was designed as a proof of concept, not as an all-in-one piracy solution, but the foundation was laid for Supercard, especially as CompactFlash is electrically identical to ATA.

It can work, although you would need an external power source for the HD. And, 4GB would be the max for the Supercard CF of course. Hardly worth it nowadays. But remember, this is only limited due to the nature of the file system. If the SC team were to UPDATE to fat32 support (or even NTFS), well, then it might be a cool project. WHo knows now if that will ever happen tho..

If you read, yes that's basically all the CF device is. It will work as long as you have a means to attach the pins correctly and have an outside power source. That said, it will not be a portable solution unless you carry around a portable power supply as well as your harddrive and it's FAT formatted and under 4gigs. Lots of limitations.
