Hi

I remember reading somewhere it's possible to install more than one operating system on a computer. Microsoft doesn't support it, but it was on there website that I read about this, so It's probably safe. Anyway, problem is, you have to install the older operating system first for some wierd reason.

So, from what Devil_Spawn wrote, it sounds like it may be wise to first install xp and LEAVE IT INSTALLED once you've installed it or if you already have xp runnning on your computer and are upgrading. It would make sense. I havn't read spicificly about vista and xp, but it supposadly works with 95 + xp, dos + xp, 98 + xp, in short a lot but NOT ALL combonations (like 95 + 98)

But remember, if vista is like the others once you install vista YOU CAN'T GO BACK AND INSTALL XP. So, if your not sure, I'd reccomend you install xp first.

Unless there is a way I don't know about that you can uninstall vista. But I really don't think you can. I think the only way to uninstall an operating system is to upgrade to a higher one, which doesn't help. So INSTALL XP FIRST!

Yeah, it's called Dual Booting and I used to do it with XP and Fedora Core. It's really easy if you have 2 hard drives, not so easy if you only have one but still very much possible.

yeah, atleast to start with i reckon dual booting xp with vista will be the best way forward as compatibility could be low

Hi

After a school day arguing it's nice to know some pople agree with me. :)

I can remember dual booting 98 and NT --- damn must be getting old!

Hi

Not that old... remember, computers get better quickly. In only ten years we've come from dos to windows.

I always recommend CLEAN installs of Windows. Yes, more work re-installing apps, but there can potentially be more problems when upgrading from a previous OS. Besides, many of your old programs are probably not going to work (or work as expected) with Vista anyway. I have been replacing/upgrading apps all week....as many of my older programs were not functioning correctly. That's just fine tho...many of these apps needed to be updated anyway!

Hi

even if you can't upgrade xp, isn't a non-upgraded xp better than no xp?

Well, if it means hackers can get into your computer maybe the answer is no.

But, you could always uninstall the network drivers for your xp operating system (so only vista could connect the the internet.)

another option would be to use nortorn internet security or some other good program. I reccomend using nortorn anyway. It's expensive, but your computer is more expensive.

Besides, if there is an article about this on the microsoft website, it's hard for me to believe there are very many issues.

Um... or you could make the drive with Vista the second drive and put XP or something on another and make it dominate then in CMD...

format C:\

And I think it asks if you're SUUUUUURE you want to format it and then you get NO operating system! Yay! :D

*wants Vista very badly*

I have a very new computer but my motherboard and power supply SUCK so I can't even upgrade my graphics card (I have 128 MB and it requires 256... ah so close) without upgrading my board and power supply too. While I'm at it though I think I'm just gonna keep my 500 GB drive and Lightscribe  drive and buy a new computer with core 2 duo (I have P4) and hand my old one off to my dad.

I want a full tower case with a few SATAs and a motherboard with a couple PCIs and a PCI express... this new NVIDIA graphics cards looks awesome. It's 768 MB-ish. Then I'll just need an awesome power supply.

Ah sorry for my rant. *has homework to do* See ya.

you can dual or triple boot off 1 drive.. I have Mac OS 10.4.8, ubuntu 6.10, and winxp on 1 drive.. but I recommend keeping your main OS on a separate drive.. keeps things discrete.  Now I'm running XP on one drive, OSX on one drive, and vista on a separate machine altogether..

Hi

You're lucky sneef. I really wish I could do a dual thingy with xp and 98 (98 for my old games that don't work) but NOOOOOOO, I can't because I already have windows xp installed on my computer and have to install 98 first. Why couldn't I learn about dual BEFORE I installed xp???

An emulator might work... I've seen them before but never used one so I dunno if it can only run applications or if you can use CD's too. Just a thought.

Hey Sneef, I thought that you couldn't use OSX on a PC... someone on other forums I go to did the same thing last week. How does that work?
