My journey into Vista...

Well, I have been running Vista for 24 hours now....very nice! Of course I had to update a few programs that just refused to work with it, but everything works great for the most part. Alot of Apple influence here, very fluid and fast. I *really* like what I see, and that is something I did not expect to say again about an M$ product.

The install went through flawlessly, and I did not have to install a single solitary driver. Everything just works. Of course, still more testing needs to be done, but I have all of my programs installed as of now and am up and running as normal. One thing I can tell you tho, after seeing this OS in action I definitely can never go back to XP :)

awesome, i expected it to lag like crazy! :)
how old is your computer?

also, what version of Vista are you running? - did you turn off all the special effects and such?

(using linux mint, a derivative of ubuntu, which really does looks like a lot like mac because of the gnome desktop.. haha)

oh, and speaking of which, do all games and programs run flawlessly?

I am running on a Dell 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 HT w/3GB of memory :) The system was one of those units that didn't come with an OS at all...well FreeDOS (I purchased it this way to save money...I had XP already). I didn't turn off any of the effects at all. Everything seems to load/move/function instantly. No delay in loading anything...just amazing. Not sure how they accomplished that, but it is VERY welcome. I am not a big PC game player. All I have on here are emulation related goodies. I played Mame32 before and that loaded immediately too. It almost seems like things are not "loading" per se ...it is definitely utilizing some excellent memory management behind the scenes.

I was expecting it to run like a dog...like how XP ran after install on my old old PC. This is different tho, by a mile. I can honestly say that Windows is now an excellent OS. I see no problems (yet), and have had no crashes at all. If a program does not work or is not compatible, the OS tells you that and then refers you to a site with a list of comparable programs that ARE Vista compatible. An example is when I installed a virus program. THe program was not compatible, but I saw that AVG *was* on that list, and grabbed that (free scanner). It is a nice touch.

All in all, looking really good :) Oh, and I am running the final :)

hm, seems pretty decent.. haha with 2.8 Ghz P4 HT and 512 mB of ram, i dont think i'd install Vista on my computer... having Linux in itself is of satisfaction knowing that i can get by :) haha

hm, does Vista's new os interface throw you off sometimes? Like their new look of IE7...

i also want to ask how many times they prompt the user for password? :)

You get prompted often when installing and running apps. Guess they are trying to make a "safer" for the shmuck who likes to execute contaminated executables!

THe interface didn't really throw me off all that much. One thing that did happen is that I accidentally deleted the recycle bin :) Found out how to restore that with a quick internet search. IE7 is super simple. Imported my firefox bookmarks and I was ready to go. Using it right now :) It works very well.

Some apps that I was using no longer run tho. I am getting probably about an 80% success rate at this point. Not a big deal tho. Just compiling apps that DO work with Vista. I have just about everything I need installed at this point, and have not encountered a conflict.

I have Vista on a 3.06GHz Celeron w/ 512 MB of RAM and a 64MB graphic card and it runs fine.

Vista rates your computers hardware on a scale of 1-4 (mines a 1) and disables the snazzy GUI effects (like see through windows) as need to keep it running.

You can turn the checks off if you need cause they do get annoying. I cannot extract compressed files directly to the Program Files directory without first extracting them elsewhere then cut&pasting them if I have the check system on.

As for password usage, I've only ever been on an admin account and in which case, the checks are just asking if you're sure you want to allow this to happen, but don't ask for a password.

The GUI is fine, I'm running Firefox2 (ironically I have the bars and bookmarks and stuff arranged in such a way as to mimic IE7's...) the start menu is a nice touch. Rather than branch out a ton of sub menus, it offers a tree like structure where clicking on a folder drops down a list of what's in it.

I do miss the fact there's no UP button anymore (up one level) in explorer. Instead each folder is clickable in the address bar and you just click the folder you want to go back to.

Finally, don't be afraid to use the search on Vista, it actually works. Like if you're lost in Control Panel, typing mouse will give you all the possible places regarding mice. Typing in the search bar in the start menu searches everything in the start menu. If I type 'microsoft' I get all my Office apps presented.

Supercard converter software works fine, no need to run it under a compatibility mode. Only program I ever needed to run under the Windows XP SP2 Compatibility mode was Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Hi

Hey, I don't know the version # of my computer, but it's about 4 years old and wasn't a great computer even when I got it. Do you think vista will give it a speed boost?

benchmarks show that:

on _very_ new games vista performs almost as well (1%)
on almost all other games vista performs up to 1/3 slower than xp
for some really wierd reason microsoft left directsound out of vista, meaning you can ONLY get boring old stereo on all current games
