RawDump the Nintendo Wii Disc Backup program has been updated to v2.0 Final. You can use this program along with a select few LG DVD-ROM drives to backup your Nintendo Wii discs. Once backup up you can unscramble and burn your backup for use with the modchips (Wiinja, CycloWiz and the WiiKey).

Changes 0.4 - 1.0:

- Faster!!! (dumps a Wii disc in 3 hours)
- complete rewrite of dumping
- error correction
- integrated unscrambler

Changes 1.0 - 1.1:
- Fixed division by zero bug
- took out the gdr drive detection code
- supported by wiinja modchip

Changes 1.31 - 2.0:
- Faster!! (dumps in about 2.5 hours)
- Faster unscrambling
- Status information while unscrambling
- Works with USB drives!!

Tutorial on wiinewz.com using rawdump 2.0 and nero.

Still not enough drive support though... and I'm not buying an LG unless my drive still doesn't have support after I buy a modchip.

EDIT: Oh.. I guess I'll need to buy one wether I like it or not. :(

gleasonator, would you mind sharing what made you say "Oh.. I guess I'll need to buy one wether I like it or not"?

Wow. I guess it was divine intervention that I chose to get an LG burner a year ago. :)

Ah I guess you rip wii disks on the PC then, crikey is the drive spinning for 3 hours or does it rip an iso then convert it, 3hrs per disk will shorten the life of any drive - good job they're cheap!

If you watch a long dvd in your pc does it also shorten your life of the dvd drive? Do you even care? I would never think of that being an issue.

It takes about 3hrs to convert to iso. Then you can use nero to burn to a dvd.

NOTE: I updated the file in the first post and also added a link to wiinewz tutorial.

Any actual compatibility lists on what drives work whether it be certain lg or all... and any possible support for anything other the lg?

popinadam, here is the text from the guy who made the tutorial;

Quote from: "austin from www.wiinewz.com"First step in copying your games for backup purposes is to get the right software and hardware. You will need one of the following DVD drives to copy games(no others will work). I received a pm that some people were having trouble locating the drives. If you go to newegg you can't just search for the model for some reason. You have to browse DVD-ROM drives then LG drives. Here is a direct link to the one I have. http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827136088

* LG-8164b
* LG-8163b
* LG-8162b
* LG-8161b

I purchased mine from newegg (8164b) and has worked like a charm in reading wii disks.

I havent heard other drives working with much success (but that does not mean it hasn't happened, but at 17.99 and in stock, why not get one). Chances are, the one in your pc won't work anyways. But you will never know until you give it a whirl (i guess that would be a spin).

Whoops. Missed this post.

Apparently the Wii drive is so similar to the LG that it's almost required to have it. That's not saying that some hard-core programming can't make it more compatible, but I bet people will either buy the drive or use emu_kdid's  (or whatever his name is) program. I already ordered a drive... so whatever.

I already bought an LG drive and it works great.  My only question is: where was this for Gamecube?  If it can dump Gamecube games as well (haven't tried yet), why wasn't this around, instead relying on a modchip like my Qoob with homebrew and the BBA?

Modern CD/DVD drives it's really not that much of a problem.. I can't remember exactly, but the lifetime of a laser in the drives is either 10,000 or 100,000 hours of being on and I'm PRETTY sure it's the latter.

For those not wanting to do the math, that's either 3,333 Wii discs, or 33,333 Wii discs. More likely then not, you'll have a new computer with a new drive before you'd ever have to worry about replacing it, and even if you did have to replace it in your computer's lifetime, the price is relatively cheap compared to the amount you'd be saving on games.

dai_uk

I guess when you look at it like that it's no problem, I remember the dreamcast taking an age over BBA or worse Serial to transfer disks (and they were only CD's !!)

So can you only do Single layer Wii disks (or are they all single layer ?) or is it very smart and will it allow you to rip Disks > 4.7gb and burn them with a DL Burner ?

If this doesn't involve flashing the LG Drives, the mind boggles how someone managed to write this - I guess the disk format must be the same or very similar to that of the Cube so this has probably taken a lot longer than it appears!

Anyway certainly makes the Wii a very interesting proposition - I'd be more interested when homebrew gets going - I'm picturing super  hang on or outrun using the wii controller :-)

Of course daydreaming ----- Daytona .... mmmmm but seeing as it isn't fully emulated on PC I'll just keep dreaming.

so far the wii games have all been single layer.   specs show that it can support dual-layer, and since wii discs are standard dvd size, it's likely they'll use dual-layer, rather than multi-disc (unlike the 8cm GC discs)

I was under the impression dual-disc Cube games like Resident Evil and Baten Kaitos were two dual layer disks. That's not the case?

sneef

no it's not the case.  they are single layer. backed 'em up, and they were the usual size.
