An opinion on playing backup games/roms.

I used to be a rom playing, copy everything on blank DVD's whore for years.  I had a modded xbox, a supercard, and rarely purchased any games except for the occasional worthwhile gamecube title.

I found myself no longer enjoying playing video games anymore.  Games were too easy to obtain and I no longer got to experience the joy of opening a new game for the first time, knowing that I spent hard earned money on it, and playing it until I got every last penny's worth out of it.  I would play games for a few hours, get slightly bored with it and swap to one of the other 30 games on my hard drive/memory card.  I lost the beauty and greatness of playing games.

With the next gen consoles, I have decided to go legit which is hard for me mainly because I am an incredibly cheap person by nature and shelling out $50-$60 for a new 360 or Wii game or buying it off of ebay for slightly less is crazy for me.  However, I am finding myself spending far more quality time playing video games and having a lot more fun with them.  I got Call of Duty 2 when I purchased my 360 and played the game to death.  I've probably put 50 hours into Wii sports.  I am finally beginning to enjoy video games again like I used to back when I was a young kid playing Mario and Zelda on the NES for the first time.

It's kind of funny that I come onto a forum such as this to say these things but I am just wondering what others feel about this particular topic.  I am in no way saying that what I am currently doing is right and others should do the same but it's just the way I have come to feel over the course of the last few years.

Dude, I can totally relate.  I remember when I was a kid mowing like five lawns to get money to buy a new game for my Atari 2600, and I would get every drop of enjoyment I could get out of each game.  There is just something special about paying for a game, the excitement of taking it home and opening the new box, the factory fresh smell, the artwork and manual, and the precious game catridge itself.  The satisfaction is intensified when the game turns out to be great and you can proudly add it to your collection.  Games seem to be more fun when you pay for them.

I third that!

but  there are some games that are sooo good that i play the heck out of them whether copied or original..

then there are some that are so good, that i go buy the original because i love the game so much that I want to make sure I support it.

I agree totally myself. I see people obsessing about having "complete rom sets" and then they never even take the time to enjoy them. Like you guys said, when you actually spend your own hard earned cash on a game, you tend to actually PLAY it,lol. I have been guilty of having a ton of PS2, XboX, DS, GC ect games and not playing em. Matter of fact im gonna make it a point to go play  Battalion Wars right now since i never got around to it before, lol.

Hi

We can't have excitement about opening new games...

but, I have that excitement I used to have when I first got a supercard cf. And when I got a supercard ds one. And when I bought a bigger cf card to hold more of my games. And so on.

The fun isn't gone. And besides, although that feeling of getting a new game is great, the feeling of playing a game is better. I just want to PLAY. I want to have fun playing things, and NOT have to worry about saving my money up. And stuff like that.

See my point?

I was always a sucker for a $5 used game at Gamestop. Still am. So I have always been bad about finishing the games I get and the Supercard doesn't change that. I do miss the New Game Smell, though.

Try getting a really small memory card.  LOL

But seriously, yes I do feel that way.  I mean, I got Final Fantasy 3, got like 3 hours into it, swapped to Phoenix Wirght 2, got 2 hours into that, swapped, now I am 15 minutes into Lunar Knights.  I mean, to be honest, I haven't gotten very deep into the games at all.

Hi

Now it's all making sence... the reason I don't feel the same way as you is because there is only about 15 nds games I like lol. So I don't have this problem.

Everyone else, just limit the amount of games you download. Is that so hard? Why can't you just say "I'm only going to download one game a month." and leave it at that.

I have a problem with burning all those console games.  I have always legitly bought all my games for my consoles.  But for my ds, its just too much of a mess to carry around more than lets say 2 games without getting all disoreinted :P.  I like being able to carry all the stuff around but for all the big name games that look good on your tv BUY IT!!!!!!

liquidnitrogen

hey! i feel the same..

when i got the NDS lite for the first time all i had was brain age.. and that wasnt very fun for a long time play...

so i got mario kart... and i played the heck out of it.... so many pouring hours and even wifi where i got my ass kicked.. (though i do teach newbs  :) ) haha

well, now that i have the supercard only the REALLY REALLY good games get played... haha, if it doesnt hook me in 1-2 hrs of time, i guess i wont be playing it...

like ouendan and elite beat agents... not to mention tetris and final fantasy III, bleach ds.

i guess when you do buy a game, you get the incentive to complete it for your money's worth.

sigh... i'd be playing Lunar Knights right now if i still had my NDS lite... its being held hostage for my poor grades :( sigh....
