Hey guys,

I got an R4 on the way, and I've really been wanting to use the Operaweb browser.

So what exactly will I need to use it with the R4? I need something that holds RAM in slot 2, right? Well, I also have a G6.

I searched for this, but came up empty, so hopefully someone here's knows about it. Can you run the Opera browser with the R4, and slot 2 card like the G6? Or is there a hack that was created to use it this way?

I know you can run Opera with something like the UltraFlash Pass, and the Supercard. So hopefully it can be done with my combination.

Thank you for any info
Setup:
White Lite
Slot 1: CycloDSx2GB Kingston Japan, Supercard DSOne+1GB Nokia(J), 16G G6 DS Real, 16G DS-Linker, R4x1GB Kingston(J),
Slot 2: G6 Lite
PSP: 3.40 OE-A

The R4 is fine but you need either a SuperCard or M3 in slot-2. NO hack has been released for the G6 yet. Check the FAQs forum for a video made by me explaining how to hack Opera.

Ah, thanks. So do you think it's possible for a hack to be created, to get the browser to run with the G6?

I'm sure it's possible, but no one has done it yet.

Luckily, I have a SCminiSD to go with my R4DS that's coming soon.

I'll be browsing the web at 56k speeds in no time, LOL.
Current setup:
Onyx DSlite/R4DS/SCminiSD
2gig Transcend card for the SCminiSD
2gig Kingston for the R4DS
4 gigglingbytes of games/apps! WOOT!

Hmmm...maybe I should think about getting me one of those. I'll check out sinkheads video, but I'm sure I won't be too successful with hacking Opera for the G6.

So my best bet is getting a slot2 that will run with the R4.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Before spending your money on a slot 2 cart, ask yourself if you are sure you want a web browser that surfs at super slow speeds.

h8uthemost

Is it really that slow? Have you used the PSP's browser? Is it as slow, or slower than that?

It depends on the site in question, especially the number of images on the page.  Pages with large amounts of images take forever, with the loading time best measure in minutes rather than seconds.  However, smaller pages usually fully load within 10-20 seconds, and you can disable images completely to make pages load pretty fast.

The DS simply doesn't have the resources that the PSP does, so yes, it's noticeably slower.  But it's still useful for day-to-day use.

h8uthemost

Yeah, I guess it would be quite a bit slower than the PSP one.

But, I'm sure what the DS browser has over the PSP one, is the touch screen. It takes forever to type something on that PSP browser. So I'm sure it's a breeze on the DS.

So that alone makes me want to try it. So, if I can't get it to work with the G6, than I'll just get a cheap Supercard to use with it.

Any type of Supercard will work with it right>?

Any non-Rumble Supercard will work.  The Rumble series has the RAM removed to lower costs.  You're probably looking at something like $40 at the cheapest unless you can find one used.  Someone at another forum mentioned you could get a Supercard MiniSD for $37 at Sky2K.com, and RHS sells them for about $50.

h8uthemost

Yeah, I figured that's about it would cost. I also need a MicroSD too right?

Sorry for my ignorance on this. I just want to make sure I get everything I actually need.

for your R4, microSD yes

for your Supercard if you plan to use it as a RAM pack.. it depends... - do you plan to use it PURELY as a RAM pack? maybe you should buy some memory for it too since it will be able to run DSLINUX (though you cant really do much... it can surf the web via slot 2 though) and run (pretty slowly) GBA roms... heh.... .... ... get the M3 if your not cheap.

h8uthemost

Well, I already have a G6 that I can play my GBA games on. So yea, I pretty much want to use as a RAM pack.

Hi

OPRA IS COOL. IT IS SLOW, BUT COOL. I LIKE IT A LOT.

Er... one option is to simply buy opera rather than buy a supercard or m3. The advantage to this is that you can support nintendo, which all pirates should do a little.

I bought OPERA for DS £20 in the uk (first one i got was pre owned £17 ..bad idea I found out after getting it home it was PASSWORD protected!!!!!  and I couldnt use it as the previous owner failed to write it down in the manual solutions  on the net for button presses etc failed to reset it/remove it and only option at that stage would be a return to NINTENDO to get it replaced and that ment both RAM PACK and DS CART to be returned!:(:( )  **

My opinion ... after using pc opera for years is .......its ok .... but not perfect  slow when browsing sites with lots of images but you can get get a speed up by disabling images and using OVERVIEW mode  :)

theres no flash suppport so no flash games  and its limited java too so some sites wont load either added to no downloads for even small files (not that you could do anything with them!) and pdfs are outa the question but ... Although I found a workaround for that if its on your GMAIL account or an account that can display the pdf as HTML then you can view it  :)

But for a way of checking emails without sitting at your pc if you leave the pc on all the time you can check yer mail anywhere in the house that the wifi reaches  :D

handwriting recognition is ok faster than using the stylus on the keyboard layout but some characters come out wrong if you scribe them too fast or how you usually write with a pen  :(

They should of added an option to be able to update at a later date via wifi but I doubt that would ever happen  :(

** One final point is check if you do purchase it that you have the right version ... reason ....... The store I went to get it from had both versions DS PHAT and DS LITE .. I needed the PHAT version so asked for it.... when I got home and found that it had the LITE version of the RAM pack in it even though it was sealed  :( :(

I took it back and got them to double check that one was the right Ram pack and discovered that a second PHAT version also had the LITE ram pack and this was the same with another 8 PHAT sealed browser packs that they had and unsealed in that store!  :(  ...fortunate for me there are a couple of the same store in my town and they called the other store and eventually found pack with the right version of the rampack although they too had to open another 5 sealed PHAT versions only to find that 4 of them had the lite ram pack in there  :(

Sooooooooooooooooo  about 15 packs later I got mine .. so be warned check your packs on purchase lol :)

Is it worth it !?  ... if your a GADGET freak and its the only thing you havent got in your collection yet.. then go for it lol :)

for practical purposes I guess you could wifi check your email at your nearest wifi hotspot but a lot of messing is required when connecting to a wifi network :(

(incidentally when looking for new wifi drivers to mess about with I discovered you can get FREE download play games.. and wifi access in McDonalds in China /Asia )
