My 1st gen DS is getting old, but I don't want to buy a lite (system's too small for my hands). It's got some scratches on the back and on the screens. How can I attempt to get rid of some of these scratches? Also, my battery is getting pretty bad. Should I buy some 3rd party battery or an official replacement from Nintendo?

Belt sander; yes, official replacement.

Kidding about the belt sander.
Setup: Onyx DS Lite, CycloDS + Kingston 8GB MicroSDHC; Camo GBA Micro, EZIV + Kingston 2GB MicroSD

Well if there are tons of scratches on the back then you could always grab one of those replacement DS shells off ebay. I did and my DS looks like new.

Bad 3rd party batteries can explode.

There aren't tons, but I would like to get rid of them. If I can find my camera's battery charger I'll show pictures.

You could always buy a used original DS at game stores.  They will let you check it out before you buy it.  Only thing you couldn't really test is the battery at that point.
Current setup:
Onyx DSlite/R4DS/SCminiSD
2gig Transcend card for the SCminiSD
2gig Kingston for the R4DS
4 gigglingbytes of games/apps! WOOT!
