Who's the winner this time around?  I'm thinking about buying one but I'm a lazy cheapskate.  Any ideas?

Try Wiikey, I heard it's really good.

DeVS

Love my Wiikey. If you can wait Chiip or WiiFre will be the way to go. They have regular updates and cost about $4 bucks to make. The only thing they currently lack is the DVD drive speed fix and the GC audio fix and in my best guess I would say both will be fixed by next week to 2 weeks tops. Dont get me wrong my Wiikey is awesome but these open source chips are closing in quickly by offering the SAME functions at a fraction of the cost and they keep updating the code weekly.

FYI, Openwii/wiip/chiip now support the faster speed when flashed with the latest openwii firmware.

i have the wiikey, love it! With that said, I think the biggest issue is your dvd burner, more so than the media. After speaking with DeVS, amrod, ratx, and nt on the scdev irc channel, and reading all i could on other wii forums, I was convinced that was true. They all suggested the pioneer 111D burner, i picked it up from meritline.com for something like approx. $42 with shipping included (ordered on sunday night received on Wed morning). Prior to this i had quite a few DRE's with Wiiand GC iso's. Now that has all gone away, and i once again am a happy camper!

So whichever way you go, make sure your current burner can handle it. And if you are into 360, it is the drive you need also.

Thanks to all above who helped make my life easier with this purchase!

i second that!  i use a pioneer 110D, and it's great for wii and GC backups.  it has a low PI/PO error rate.

another good burner (so say the "scene" experts) is the NEC 3520

Ya just saw that WiiFree also fixed this. Guess the ONLY thing that now sets these mods apart from a Wiikey or Cyclowiz or Wiinja is the GC audio fix that will surely be fixed any sec now since it is the only thing left to fix.

I'm using an LG drive to burn my Wii games for the WiiKey on Philips DVD-R, they work great, and full speed.  I have nothing to complain about.

I'm getting a WiiKey soon, it seems to be one of the best. I have an LG drive and I hope it will be able to burn my games properly *crosses fingers*

Any way to find out how many PI/PO errors you get during burning? I'm using Nero.

PharaohsVizier

What do you mean PI/Po errors?  Mine just burns perfectly fine, there are no stops, no errors, the disk just pops out after 25 minutes, fully playable, no lag, no stuttering.

Not sure about Wii, but LG burners are not 100% when it comes to Gamecube backups.  I know because I've used them.  even with the correct Ritek G05 media, there was a chance of producing a disc that caused DRE's at some point.

I believe Nero Infotool can test media+burner.  I think it was infotool. not at home now.  I can check later.

I burned a couple wii backups on TDK media (can't remember which dye, as I said, i'm not at home now) using my Pioneer drive, and they worked fine.  the wii's laser transport seemed slightly noisier (but it may have been my imagination) but the disc worked fine.

I know for my gamecube, I could use medium-quality media sometimes (like the TDK) on my Pioneer burner, and the disc would still be playable (though at some point during play there may be a DRE).  but I couldn't use excellent media (like the Ritek G05) on a lousier burner and expect it to work.  Got Luigi's Mansion and MGS to work on ritek G04 (8cm) media burned on my LG, but like I said, they weren't fool-proof.

I have a Dell 1501 Laptop which has a TSSTCorp built-in DVD burner, so you know... well know brand and all that
EDIT: Wow... TSST Stands for Toshiba & Samsung Storage Technology.. so it is a well known brand... what a twist!

With a wiikey (which I installed myself and the soldering job was below monkey standards   )
FUJIFILM 03 didn't work

TuffDisc DVD+R 16x, the dye was MCC 003, every single one I've burned has worked flawlessly. Strange as people say that when the DVD burning software auto-changes the booktype to DVD-ROM it won't work... Nero does it and they have all worked like original discs  :?

vitius

well I'm hoping that my games will work with my LG drive, TDK DVDs and Nero for burning.

If the TDK disks don't work should I try Taiyo Yuden disks or should i get a different burning drive (really don't want to get a new one). Also, whats a good speed to burn at? I've heard 2x or 4x is good.

DeVS

I burn at 4x with perfect results.

What are these open source chips?  I haven't heard of them til now.  (I know what open source means)
