I have 2 x 1gb sticks with loads of no install apps that I use for work you can get virtualised and standalone apps of most of the popular versions of windows software

portable open office  (about 70mb) is a great tool to have along with no install burn tools and no install operating systems such as GENTOO usb edition or the usb version of KNOPPIX

most pc's can boot by usb now so you can in effect use your chosen O.S. anywhere, without disturbing the original O.S. on the machine  you are using to host your O.S.
