The Safety of Torrents?

Hi

I know that using torrents to pirate software is a lot more dangerous (of being sued) than normal ftp. I avoid torrents as much as possible, but a lot of things you can't get in any form buy through torrents. (I don't use bittorrent for nds games, just so you know.)

How dangerous are torrents?

At first, I told myself I'd only use bittorrent every once in a while. Unfortunately, bittorrent is addicting. I am now finding myself using it quite often. Should I really stop? How serious is it?

Also, how safe is seeding. I mean, all the torrent sites say "Be nice, seed as much as possible." but I've got to say, safety is more important than keeping torrents alive. Is there really no danger in seeding, or should I seed as little as possible? To what ratio should I seed to?

depends on your ISP and how they view piracy or bit torrent usage  although there are plenty of legal torrents out there such as for knoppix or other free versions of linux and many many other free tools etc that are often better than commercial versions anyhow :)

rule of the thumb is DONT GET GREEDY this flags you up to your ISP and anyone else such as torrent sites etc :)

yes seeding is important thats how everyone gets a good share or a faster download :)

but this is where the problem lies most ISP's frown on uploading of stuff  :(

they are reasonably safe ... use PEER GUARDIAN with your client or SAFE PEER in the case of AZUREUS and there are also other block list tools too that ban bad ip ranges :)

ratio is usually best to seed to 1:1 but you do not have too but... some sites ban you for not seeding 1:1 or classed as HIT AND RUNS you take but dont seed back  :)

recommended torrent clients are

U-torrent

or AZUREUS

:)

other clients are blacklisted with some torrent sites etc as they are pretty poor performance clients  :)

usually torrents are pretty safe as far as files go but ..... always keep your antivirus up to date and have spyware removal tools and use them every now and then to be safe ... also keep that updated too  :)

YES theres ALWAYS a danger when downloading usually when a) its not legal and b)you also run the risk if its stolen software that you have to take a chance that its not got any nastys with it such as virii or trojans etc :(

anymore questions just ask  :)

Might I suggest paid Usenet access as an alternative?

Can't beat it! That being said please watch where this topic goes, lol. Links to torrent sites I suppose will be ok since they don't actually host files just the torrents, but please remember no rom links.

Also torrent technology is unfortunately getting the same bad "pirate" label that Divx has gone through, but in reality it's legit uses will change the way files (of any kind) are served up on the net in the very near future. I mean look at how fast it is to download a well seeded torrent and that puts ZERO strain on 1 persons/companies server, you couldn't ask for more from a business standpoint.

Ohh and I perfer U Torrent. I used to use Azures but it has gotten bloated and slow while U Torrent remains lean and fast.

Personally, I like Bitcomet...  Nice and easy to use.

uzumakishade

do you mean usenext? if not could you explain it?

ive been thinking of getting usenext access but not sure if its legit or has the files im looking for (isos, old cartoon episodes like TMNT, pokemon, samurai pizza cats etc) and other things

Stay away from public torrents for illegitimate purposes because anyone can see your IP address and what you are downloading. The same goes for using the gnutella network, bearshare, limewire etc. Downloading the wrong album, movie, or game from one these sources will likely get you a verbose email warning from your ISP.

Stick with good old fashioned newsgroups (Usenet) alt.binaries.* and IRC search, nuff said.

This is what I use. $25/mo unlimited, and they mean it. In January I downloaded 237GB. That must have been when I got my 360, heheh. 120 day retention(which means they keep what is posted for 120 days) and nice completion(which means they don't miss much of what is posted).

www.usenetserver.com

I've been hearing good things about them. Everything is the same except retention is 101 days but they're $15/mo. I might try them for a month to see how they are.

These will get you everything you need and will transfer as high as your ISP will send it to you.

Again depends on your ISP you could also be flagged up as a heavy user and capped or packet managed ( they slow your connection to give others that live around you /sharing the link at their end they use the contention packet shaping so everyone gets FAIR USE)  :(

Trick is with news groups and binaries try not to HAMMER it all the time :)

more so if your ISP has contention ratios or gb limits  :)

Hi

What? Torrent links are allowed? Wasn't expecting that...

Anyway, I've been using Utorrent. It's the only client I can get to work. It seems that nortorn likes Utorrent a lot. I didn't even go through opening a port, I just told nortorn to "Allow utorrnet to connect to the Internet." and "Allow utorrent to access a dns server" and I was done. No firewall problems or anything. Nortorn defenately likes utorrent.

So, I shouldn't seed over a ratio of one? Okay.

And what do you all think? How much torrents should I download a month.

Oh, and the whole point of pirating stuff is it's free. Otherwise I could just buy things.

i was with AOL for 7 years until january & had to move ISPs cause thay flagged me as a heavy user & capped my line to 76 kbs on a 8MB connection
i only found out after i phoned them up when my speed dropped they never told me they were doing it
so i had no internet for 3 month cause they would not take there tags of my line so i could not join anyone else BUGGERS

If your ISP is going to cap you there isn't a lot you can do. You are slightly better off, though, with Usenet because you aren't using any upload bandwidth. ISPs tend to get more snippy about how much you upload.

uzumakishade: Yes, you can get the same stuff. Usenet usually get stuff first, actually. It's not going to completely replace BT for you, of course, but you'll find yourself using it less and less.

Been using for about 3yrs and love it. I pay the $40 for 3months. Very fast and reliable, never have completion problems. I also use Newzbin.com along with newsleecher (though altbinz is also very nice and free).
