Why is my 2gb SD card only 1gb according to my PC?

Hi

I bought a 2gb microsd card a while ago for use with my SCDSONE. Since then, I haven't actually needed the full 2gb of space. Now I need all the space, and am having a problem.

My computer says that my 2gb microsd card is only 969MB in size, or almost 1gb. This is the size you'd expect a 1GB card to be.

What's the deal here?

Things I've tried.

1. Reformatting
2. Using FAT32 instead of FAT16/FAT
3. Running a disk-check.

Actually, I've tried all of these things several times!

Anyone know what's wrong? I need help.

Note that I'm using my camera as an SD card reader. However, this isn't the problem like I previously thought. I know this because I just today tested a 4gb SD card with my camera, and it worked perfectly.

Could I have a defective or scratched microsd card? Is that possible? I don't see any scratches, but then microSD cards are so small...

I'm guessing here, I really have no Idea what the problem is, which is why I'm making this post. Please help me if you have any idea what's wrong. Thank you.

can you use XP disk management on this card !?

right click my computer on your desktop and choose manage then double left click on disk management and see if you can see the card in disk management window .. it may of marked a section of the card bad or unusable you maby able to recover it this way and by formatting it from there  :)

you could also try a partition tool such as partition magic and do the same with that formatting the card or merging the card into 1 drive if it shows 2 parts :)

Tried that. My computer hasn't marked any section of the card as bad or unusable, it really thinks the card is only 969mb in size!

since that didn't work, should I bother trying a partition tool?

It could be a problem with your SD reader. Try picking up a new USB reader for about $5.

But my camera (which, as I said above, is what I'm using as my SD card reader) works just fine with a 4gb SD card.

so according to the camera, how much memory is on the card?

Hi

The camera doesn't say a thing about how much memory is left on the card.

you could compare the number of photos (or movie minutes) in your empty 4gb card with the empty 2gb one.

one possibility could be a circulation of fake cards.

Devil_Spawn

there is a tool that was posted on the forums that fixes this issues, ill go find it

Hi

Y'know, I think maybe both my camera and my computer are messed up.

The first thing I did was try develspawn's tool. I get a message saying "the card capacity is error! Please check the selection is correct or the card reader is supported the capacity." Is that even proper english?

Anyway, then I tried comparing the amount of "movie minutes" with my problematic 2gb micro sd card and my 4gb sd card. This is what makes me think maybe my camera is part of the problem.

When I tested the problematic 2gb card the amount of "movie minutes" I got were 106 minutes and 59 seconds. When I tried the same thing with the 4gb sd card the camera says "card full."

My computer on the other hand, says the 4gb card is empty. (and it says that the 4gb card is almost 4gb like it should)

I also found out something else, my camera also thinks my the 2gb card is 1gb. How do I know? I get about 26 "movie minutes" on my 256mb SD card. So...

MATH TIME!
256mb * 2 = 512mb AND 512mb * 2 = 1gb SO 256mb * 4 = 1gb

26min IS CLOSE TO 25min AND 25min * 4 = 100min AND 100min IS CLOSE TO 106min and 59sec.

This tells me that my camera more messed than my PC, because it thinks a 2gb card is 1gb AND it doesn't like the 4gb card. Atleast my PC likes the 4gb card.

What's the deal? Is my camera or my computer causing the problem? No, I don't have another SD card reader to test with. I'll consider buying one, since using my camera has always been annoying. But buying an SD reader won't neccesarily solve the problem, right?

It really sounds to me like you have a fake card...

Lemoe

yeh, if everything is saying its 1gb, maybe it is.....
64 PORTS 4EVER!!!!!

Hi

Maybe. I don't remember the name of the place I got the card from, but I remember it was an E-bay like site.

I guess it's time for a new micro-sd card.
