They have a longer time to check for problems if you mail it.  People are much nicer when they are face to face with the customer.

Vapourstreak

I boxed it up already.  Is it still okay?

dantheman

The warranty is supposed to cover problems that are beyond your control, like the cracks in the hinges or dead pixels.  As far as I know, a crack by the headphone jack is not a problem caused by Nintendo, so therefore rightfully you should pay to get it fixed.  It's not Nintendo's job to fix stuff for free when you break it yourself.

Vapourstreak

I didnt break it myself...

dantheman

So then who broke it?  Forgive me if I'm being ignorant, but aren't the cracks around the hinges the only ones Nintendo admits to being their fault?

Vapourstreak

When I took it out of the box, it was like that.  I don't have the recieipt, so I can't exchange it.

PharaohsVizier

Why'd you wait all this time before swapping it then?

Vapourstreak

I didn't mind the cracks.  I'm giving it to my friend now because I got a blue one in HK.  My friend minds

PharaohsVizier

then get him to pay for the replacing!

Vapourstreak

My friend is 9 years old .  He lives with his uncle in Canada because his parents are still in Hong Kong.  His uncle wont pay anything for him except for his food because he doesn't care about him much.

Altor

Rough.

Hmm... Does he have a paypal account at his disposal?  I'll send him some cash, heh

Vapourstreak

To me! I'll be sure to give the cash to him... NOT

Altor

BTW, you'll never, ever get them to replace a unit from a different region.  That's what I heard.

Vapourstreak

Sry for being confusing (I think), but I'm replacing the Polar White DS Lite and giving THAT one to myu friend.  Im keeping the one I bought from HK.

Altor

Ooooh.  So what's the problem then?  Sorry I guess I should read the topic...

Well, you can always just say that one of the buttons doesn't work all the time.  I did that ('course, I was being honest), and they sent me a refurb.  I won't bore you with the details, but in a short time I was playing a perfect-condition DS Lite again.

Say, "My A button doesn't always work right off.  I have to push it a couple times, sometimes really hard, before it works.  I take really good care of it, I didn't spill anything on it or anything like that.  Other times it works great.  I don't understand it.  It's really frustrating though, I don't even use it anymore.  I was going to buy a PSP instead, my friend says they've got a lot of great games and good graphics, but my mom said I should call and see if you could fix it somehow?"

This verifies that it is in fact a "strange hardware problem", not a broken button caused by misuse.  They will say, sure, send it to this address.  That's your cue to say..

"Oh awesome!  When will I get it back?"

They will say usually within 2 weeks.  Now you stay silent for a few seconds, finally adding:

"There's no faster way for me to get a working system?"

THEREBY UNLOCKING THE BONUS LEVEL WHERE YOU GET A NEW (refurbished to new condition) ONE SENT TO YOU IMMEDIATELY, and you send yours back in the box it comes in!  Gotta drive to a purolator location though, that's a bummer.  But better than buying a "new" system within a couple business days.

They don't like to tell you right away that they have that express whatever service since it's extra paperwork and stuff, but if you act disappointed enough they'll give you the option.  You do need a credit card so they can charge you if you don't send your old system back, but they don't charge it otherwise.
