the only consistent cause here is the camera. all this time, you're using the camera to format - which it will only format to maximum 1gb if that's the largest capacity it can support.

i don't know too much about usb mode in cameras, but it sure sounds like when you connect it to the computer to read the card, it's actually the camera that's doing the formatting and not the computer.

my suggestion is, before you buy anything try a) formatting the card in a friend's card reader or b) using some other device to format it - it doesn't have to connect to the computer, something like a pda or a friend's camera would do.

Do you think a wii could do it? I just got my wii a little over a week ago, and haven't tried SD cards at all. Can a wii format an SD card? Will it format big SD cards? Will it format 2gb/4gb cards?

Sadly, the Wii can only load from SD cards and move game data to and from them. It cannot edit, create or delete any non-game data from an SD card.
