ok, not to call everyone stupid, but it think this entire thread is completely stupid. :P

.bin firmware upgrades erase the entire firmware on the card and rewrite it, so going through the firmware in order is not going to help anyone even the slightest little bit. However if anybody looked on the supercard site there was an update that was still called 1.81, now called 1.83 that said "fixed FC game support" ie, they fixed the emulators. this is what fixed your problem, so please stop wasting peoples time making them go collecting random old firmware because it seemed to make it fix the emulators.... because it doesnt !!! :D

ok crazy rant over now :P
the 1.84 firmware is also a .bin so this process is still useless
blah!

even if this was true, ther furthest back you ever need to go to is the most recent .bin you can find

1.81 was a bin file as well, but it still broke the emulators.  I fully understand that it should be a complete upgrade, but apparently in this case it still required 1.80 beforehand.

Have you personally tried going from 1.7 to 1.83 and testing the built-in emulators?  I haven't, but nobody has reported anything to the contrary, so I'm keeping this stickied until it's proven that going from 1.7 to x.x doesn't break the emulators.

Devil_Spawn

yeah it works great for me from 1.7, even from 1.53... i guess hardware revisions _could_ cause it... but... i still aint sure

I was bored the other night and decided to actually test this out.  Downgraded to 1.7 then upgraded directly to 1.84, and the emulators did not break.  Unstickying the topic now as the issue no longer exists.
