"4 times longer battery life" or something like that... If that's true, I'll definitely buy one, regardless of any other considerations like price and comparatively mediocre game library.

Improved battery life is supposed to be largely to do with the improved screen, which uses LED lighting in some fashion.  I'm not sure how... is it just the backlight, or is the entire screen just a matrix of super-tiny leds?  Either one is technically feasible.

If the entire screen is a matrix of LEDs, that means a vast reduction in the chance of dead pixels.  LEDs are about the simplest thing in the universe to manufacture.

Supposed to have 8gigs of internal storage too.

Altor

What would it be used for?

DeVS

Word is that the PSP will load data onto the 8gig hd so that the next time you play the game it will speed up game play by reading the info off the hd, and also for the PS1 games they are selling for you to play on the PSP.

How much do you want to bet the firmware is going to be locked down bitch-hard too?

I'm pretty sure they just mistyped "LCD".  the only kind of LED screen with the kind of resolution necessary is OLED (organic LED), and they aren't known to be very vibrant; just cheap and power-conserving.

Actually I've seen this new highend LED DLP TV, it was pretty nice.  The resolution was way better than the LCD or plasma ones beside it.

If "LED" is a typo, they typo-d it twice in a row  :?

strells

It's probably an LCD display with LED backlighting (instead of fluorescent bulb).  The entire industry is moving to LED backlighting to eliminate the mercury found in the fluorescent bulbs.  Apple's new 15" MBPs are some of the first mainstream large displays that use the technology.  But the displays themselves are still LCD.

Koji

Unless someone can hack the firmware fairly quick, I'm not going to bother. I'm currently happy with my PSP as is.

which isn't surprising if they typo-d it in the first place.  it's not a "typo" per-se, but a common misunderstanding of technology

i was doing some research into a new set of laptops for the company I work for, and realized that there's been a transition to a form of LED BACKLIGHTING that increases color intensity and is more power-efficient.

perhaps this is the "LED" screen they mentioned.. although the screens are still LCD, they use LED backlighting.

and, as I mentioned before, there is also OLED, but I highly doubt they would use that technology, since every OLED screen I've seen looks pretty low quality

Altor

LED backlighting would make sense, yeah... would give better battery life, brighter display, less physical space required, lower manufacturing cost...

I've read somewhere that this rumor wasn't true now. I really would like to get a new slim psp. But like Koji mentioned, I wouldn't get one until it was cracked.
