i only downloadeded the kernel v1.09 onto my micro sd. however, whenever i click on the files in my r4, i get errors whenever i try to access it (files like themes, skins, ebooks, etc.) basically i cant access anything that was in the kernel download. the error i get is "this types of files currently not allowed to operate". can someone tell me whats going on please.

did you unpack the files and copy them to your memory card as per R4 site

How to update R4?
After downloading and decompressing the new updated files, there will be one shell folder and two files _DS_MENU.DAT、 _DS_MSHL.NDS.Copy these files to the root directory of TF card to replace the former/older  files

themes need to be in the themes folder

hmm...was I supposed to take out all the files from the folders (such as _ system_ and moonshl)and put them onto the root of the micro sd?

Take the contents of the archive, directories and all, and drop them on the card. If you have the themes in the themes folder you can switch them by pressing R+Select. If you're navigating to the themes folder and clicking things that won't work.

Yes.

If you dont want moonshell, then you dont have to add those files. There's actually a detailed walkthrough on the R4 site that shows you how to get everything going.
