Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Beta 2

I got an Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Beta 2 key and played it for a while last night.  I am very impressed so far.  This was what I'd been waiting for, even though I'd completely forgotten about it.  I really think this can take a run at UT3...

Obviously it's a mix of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and Quake.  Which were both great multiplayer games with their own positives and negatives.  I LOVED the tactics required in Wofenstein because I didn't have to be an expert at the game with unlimited free time to feel some satisfaction in playing and to get some enjoyment.

I'm really liking the way Quake Wars plays and feels. It's kind of like Battlefield 2/2142 meets Halo meets Unreal Tournament... It's weird, I've never been much of a Halo fan, mainly due to me sucking at playing FPS games on consoles.  Don't get me wrong, Halo is cool, it's just too damned hard to play like that.  I'm mainly a PC gamer at my core.  So what I get here is a chance to play something like that on the PC in current gen.  Anyway, it has alien weapons and vehicles and human traditional weapons and vehicles which I suppose is what reminds me of Halo. It reminds me of Battlefield 2/2142 in that it has an emphasis on team play.  But instead of simply encouraging team play, team play is required.  You get more points for playing your role rather than base raping and constantly sniping.  And finally, it reminds me of Unreal Tournament because it just feels faster than most games like this and has a nice gritty feel and plays nice on my modest rig.

Let me also mention the stats.  From what I've read in various previews and forums, the stats are temporary (YAY!!!) so a regular gamer like me can actually still enjoy the game without having to unlock simple items like grenades like in BF2142 while the geek who plays 20 hours a day has stronger weapons and a variety of items.

If you're thinking "Forget it, there are too many FPS games out there." or "The graphics just aren't up to par." you really should try this game, and it's not even finished yet.  It's just so much fun.  I had almost totally forgotten about the Wolfenstein games that I had so much fun playing before BF2.

If you've never played it, you may even want to think about downloading and trying Wofenstein: ET first.  It's free BTW.  Go here to download the game for Windows Linux or OSX.

I tried out the first beta and it wouldn't run very well on my aging 6800 AGP card.  I just ordered some new parts so I'm looking forward to trying out beta 2.  I'm a big fan of objective-based team FPS games, so I should like this.

Good point about the stats.  Ranked servers absolutely ruined BF2.  Hopefully ETQW can avoid this so that players actually play as a team instead of playing for their stupid fucking "knife badge".

What I'm really looking forward to is TF2.

I really liked my ATI 9700 Pro, but unfortunately ATI's resurgence ended shortly after that.  They've failed on multiple fronts, such as performance and Linux drivers.  The only real positive ATI has going right now is driver performance on Vista, but other than that they're getting smoked.

That's a laptop card right?  From what I can tell it uses a PCI-e interface.

Me and socket was on the same server last night by total coincidence lol  ;D. THe game is a BLAST. I've had it preordered for a couple months now and cant wait for the release Oct 2. Beta 2 is way more fun than beta 1 was. Everything is more refined, more vehicles and Valley map is fun.

Yeah that was cool / weird.  I was like... hmm, someone named 754boy... On my team... doing just about as well/shitty as me... I was trying to get your attention during the game but it's hard in games with so much action... If I recall correctly, we got our asses kicked that round.  We were trapped right outside the tunnel.

I'm annoyed that it shows my login name as my player name, hopefully that'll be resolved.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong. It even adds my "clan prefix" but doesnt display the name I want to use in-game.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hey when I was logging off.  I didnt get to play Beta 1, but from the videos it looked a lot less refined, like you said.  I am shocked that I basically totally forgot about this game.  It's really going to surprise a lot of people.

Yeah, I didnt even notice you trying to contact me during the mach lol with all the chaos going on. Also, if anyone sees 754Boy in any other online game, it's me  :D

Finally got a chance to play a bit tonight with my new PC parts.  While I enjoy the chaos, the tactical side of me wants to play with a small number of players so there's more strategy.

The game is easier to play when there is less players. I'm pretty sure some smaller servers will appear after the retail game is released.
