Well, this seems to use GC mode for the actual DVD playback but it claims to work.

Has anyone tried this yet?

Team Symbiote have released a DVD Player for the Wii, now all those Wii modders can jump for joy. It seems as if a lot of hackers were at work on the project and it is a total software solution to get DVDs playing on the Wii. In order to get it working, you have to Burn the application with Clone CD, then boot it in a modded Wii with a homebrew program YAOSM 1.8, when the menu pops up you simply hit Z to unmount, change the disc to a DVD movie and then hit START to play - DVD movies finally playable on the Wii!

Controls in Movie:

L, Left, and Down = Rewind
R, Right, and Up = Fast Forward
Start, and A = Pause/Play
B = Stop
X = Subtitles On/Off
Y, Left Thumbstick, and Right Thumbstick = Nothing
Z = Unmount

I read this will only kill the Wii lens (it's in the same forum discussion thread).  Any ideas?

Ya im not gonna even mess with it. 2 different mod teams have said prolonged use of this or dvd9 game disc can burn out your Wii sense the lens is not made to read those disc. I have about 6 dvd's players inside various other devices in my house, so I will stick to those for watching dvd's,lol. Pretty cool none the less that they got it working.

Some sites are inaccurately reporting that this homebrew program uses the Wiimote.  AFAIK all Wiimote functions are completely disabled when in Gamecube mode.  This program is essentially Gamecube homebrew.

Ya wonder if anyone has tested on a GC?

That's what I don't get. It's GC homebrew, yet it's able to use the wii's DVD feature. I mean, the GC can't read DVD's right, even if the DVD's were the right size. So how come this is able to use a wii-only feature.

And, I thought that Wii games used DVD's, so how come wii games don't burn out the lazer? What's the difference?

The GC can read DVD's and the Wii disc are not DVD's, there a proprietary format of Nintendo's.

Yeah, this makes me think that this homebrew should also run on a properly modded Gamecube.

I gave my moded GC to my nephew so hopefully someone else here can give it a run.

Well the Cube reading dvd makes sense as the disks were mini dvd's weren't they ? and panasonic introduced the Q which could play DVD and is gorgeous (my friend has one!)

Didn't know wii disks were proprietry, wonder if we're talking the format or if the drive is proprietry anyone remember the Dreamcasts GD-ROM !

I would think it's comparable to the Dreamcast GD-ROM.  I think in Ninty's case, the disc is a regular DVD but the encoding could be different.  Just a theory to throw out there.

I think a properly modded GC would work though I would think not entirely as the lens hardware isn't made to seek beyond the mini-DVD size... but the hardware technology should be able to read DVDs.

Good point about the lens hardware on the GC.  That might be a problem.

No you can get the GC to read past the size of a mini-DVD. You can put multiple GC iso's on a  single dvd disc and the GC can read the entire 4 gigs and launch the game you choose.

Cool so last time they restricted you by the size of the case !

Doh! Guess that's why so many Full size DVD Cube cases are on ebay etc!

Hi

Wait, GC games = mini DVD's

So when the Wii reads a GC disk, it's the same thing as reading a DVD right?

So how come GC games don't burn out the Wii's lazer?

I could be wrong but I believe the GC and Wii lasers are not constantly reading the disc. I believe it loads info into ram plays from there and only access the disc when it needs more info. DVD movies are constantly being accessed by the dvd laser.

Also GC games are not just mini-DVD's they use a proprietary file system and GC laser's read them differently then a normal dvd laser reads dvd movies. Just because they look like DVD's doesn't mean they are. A cd looks like a dvd but it is not of course.
