Hey, thanks!

Well the error message comes up as soon as I try to open Moonshell, it says "An error was detected while trying to access the disc or a file. Please confirm the following...

Did the setup end normally?
Is the "/moonshl" folder moved or deleted
Have you enabled the resume function with a media that is not supported?
So you have enough free space on your media?
Please re-format the media and try again.
Please try with a different media from another manufacturer.

I know there is enough space on the mini SD disk, its 4 gb, I deleted it and loaded it on again, but with the same result. I am not sure why it won't work.

do you have moonshell in a folder in the root directory of your sd card (called moonshl) that would be my guess is your issue.

let me know your answer after checking.

Hello, I'm kind of a newb to the homebrew arena. I searched for my answer, but had a hard time finding anything. When I try step 2 from the tutorial, I hit a snag:
QuoteThen go where you extracted the MoonShell zip file, and launch Setup.exe:

When I extracted the MoonShell zip file used for the R4;  "MoonShell for M3 DS Simply/R4 DS/ItouchDS"; I did not get any executable files.

Can anyone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?

P.s. I tried the easy way, and extracted moonshell to my microSD card to no avail.

First off welcome to scdev!

Well i see your issue and you are mixing up the premade packages with the ones you make yourself (the step 2 that you are talking about. As the tutorial states, If you DL a premade, you can skip steps 2, 3, and 4).

So take your DL'd R4 package and extract it somewhere you can find. open the folder and put the contents, moonshl and _moonshl.nds in the root directory of your SD card and you should be good to go.

Let me know how it works out for you.

Hey,

Ya, the "moonshl" folder is in the "moonshell" folder in the root directory and I still get the error message. I tried taking the "moonshl" folder out and putting it directly in the root directory, but the error message came up again.

Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately, it's still not working. I'm happy that I haven't lost my mind, and can still follow simple directions though.  ;)

Here is some additional info that may be of some help:
I formatted my 1 GB microSD card in windows with the FAT File System and Allocation unit size of 16 Kilobytes. (Not sure if any of this matters)
I extracted the files (moonshl and _moonshl.nds) into the root directory (that's the very lowest folder on the microSD card right?)

Ok, so everything should be good to go right? Nope. When I plug the microSD into the R4 and boot up the DS, I'm greeted with a never ending loading screen. (which is the same result I get without the microSD card installed in the R4)

Thanks again for all the help,
Jake

A standard Moonshell installation is not enough to get the R4 itself booting.  You need to download the firmware files from the R4 website and put those on the card.  You can then add Moonshell later if you want.

Ok, I guess I'm more of a computer retard than I thought. I went to the R4 website and downloaded the kernel:

R4 V1.18 kernel (English/French/Korean)

I'm not really sure if this is what you meant by firmware files. When I downloaded and unzipped the file, it looked very similar to the files in the pre-packaged downloads that onekelly posted in his tutorial. Needless to say, it's still not working. It still hangs on the "LOADING" screen when I start my DS Lite. I'm really sorry for all the stupid questions guys, it's just that I've tried everything that has been suggested to no avail, and am at the end of my rope.

No problem with the questions.

I have to ask this so we can help you further (so do not take offense to it). When and where did you buy your R4? Is it the standard R4, a clone, or the R4 SDHC version?

Now for the files that should be on your microSD card should be the following:

_system_          <--Folder   (this is a firmware file)
moonshl            <--Folder
_DS_MENU.DAT  <--File  (this is a firmware file)
_DS_MSHL.NDS  <--File

that is it (we will worry about games later)

Do you have another microSD card you can try out to make sure it is not that?

jakethesnake

Thanks again for all your help guys,

Here is the info on my R4. I got it from GameYeeeah.com. (not sure if they're reputable or not) I'm not really sure how to tell if it's a clone either. I will attach a picture that I found on Google of model, and all the stuff that I recieved with my R4.

As for the files, I have all the ones that you listed above. I tried several different D/L sources (this tutorial, R4 homepage, and one more I can't remember), and they all look like what you listed above.

I do not have a spare microSD card, but will probably buy one the next time I get out of the house. (3 week old babies limit what you can do with your time ;) )

I just don't get why the microSD card would work fine on my phone 4 days ago, (I've formatted it since) and fine when I hook it up to the computer, but not in the R4. I'm starting to think I got a bad cart guys.  >:(

Have you been able to play any games with it? Remember moonshell will not play roms. you have to use the games button for that.

jakethesnake

You're referring to the games button within moonshell correct?
I haven't been able to get past the loading screen when I power on the DS.
I even tried to make a "Games" folder (with a rom in it) as one of the YouTube tutorials suggested, to no avail.
I'm going to buy a new microSD later.
Then I'm going to try to send this thing back and get a new one. I got it for like $15 shipped. Does that mean it's a clone?

My guess is that it is a clone and the card is messed up, not the micro sd but i cannot be sure.

When i said games button, i meant one of the three buttons when you power up. cause you do not actually need moonshell to power up the card and play games. There are three buttons games, multimedia, and settings.

Hey, I still can't get moonshell to work, the moonshl folder is there and its in the root directory, so I am not sure why its not working...anyone have any ideas?
