So I have the option of picking up a PS3 60GB or buying one of the New 40GB models.

I heard that the 60GB is better because it is completely backward compatible with Original PS2 games. Other then that and the HDD size is there anything else I should take into conisderation?

Why would I buy one version over the other? And keep in mind with my situation I can get either one for the same price and HDD does not matter to me.

If they are both the same price then definitely get the 60GB model.  The 40GB model has a smaller harddrive, looses PS2 backward compatibility, has fewer (two) USB ports, and does not have a built in memory card reader (a USB pocket reader can be used).

Check out this deal on the 40GB model . . .

If you've been thinking about getting a Sony PlayStation 3 for some time now and the arrival of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction made the temptation even stronger, you're in for a treat as Dell brings a very sweet deal to the table. If you purchase a 40GB Sony PlayStation 3 for US$ 399, you'll also get Ratchet and Clank's latest adventure plus a Blu-ray copy of Spider-Man 3 to be enjoyed in full 1080p glory. If Ratchet and Clank's and Spider-Man 3 BD interest you, then this deal is like getting a PS3 for only $309.

So far that confirms me getting the 60GB so far. The movies i'll be renting and that specific game does not interest me at all .... Thanks for your input!

Thats a sweet deal bitblt. I was gonna get my brother and dad a PS3 for christmas and will get this package if I can. Do you know if that applies to the States as well (that link is for the Canada store and I can't find that deal on the USA site)?

Yeaop that deal is Canada Only. One forum suggested calling in and seeing if the U.S. Dell customer service will price match it ....

isnt the lack of backward compatibility just marketing because they used an emulator anyway

DeVS

The 80gig and most of the 60gig used real PS2 hardware then they changed it to where all the new 60gig (not sure about new 80gig) PS3's used emulation in order to save money and then in the 40gig they did away with the PS2 altogether. IMHO they should have kept alteast the emulation in the 40gig PS3's since their still making PS2 games.

english ps3's never had ps2 hardware

DeVS

Yes they did. My 60gig has the PS2 hardware in it. Thats why I got it when I did because they announced they were taking it out and going with emulation for future versions.

Yep, my 60GB PS3 plays PS2 games too, even online PS2 games like Star Wars Battlefront.

I think this is how it breaks down . . .

All US/JAP 20GB and 60GB PS3's support PS2 hardware emulation using the PS2 Emotion engine chipset.

European 20GB and 60GB PS3's support PS2 emulation using software, no Emotion engine chipset.

All of the lower priced US/JAP/EU PS3's with 40GB/80GB have zero PS2 emulation.  I believe PS1 emulation is still supported.
