from nintendowifi.com:
QuoteImportant note: The Nintendo WFC ID and the game card are treated as a unit. Because of this, playing your Nintendo DS game card in another Nintendo DS system may override all of your online information saved to the game card, including your own personal Friend Code. Other players with this Friend Code would no longer be able to identify you as an online friend until you provided them with the new Friend Code you would need to generate. We recommend against playing your Nintendo WFC-compatible DS game cards in any one else's Nintendo DS system.

Looks like the Friend code is a hash of the game-id and your DS's MAC address.  Combine that with the following:
QuoteIf you receive a message that you are unable to connect to the Nintendo WFC because the Wi-Fi ID from the Nintendo DS and the Game Card do not match, you are using a game card that was set up with another Nintendo DS. We recommend that you play your game in the same Nintendo DS that the game card was set up in.

If you wish to permanently use the game card in a new Nintendo DS, you should first transfer the WFC ID from the old DS to the new DS. This will keep your Friend Code and Friends Roster intact.

Apparently the game-id is registered to a certain DS unit. Dumps will therefor only benefit one person.

just my thoughts on it though.

You make really good points.......Hey yo Snoop, do u think the roms are gonna work online?

I'd pay for mario kart anyway so getting these roms to work online dont really matter to me and chances are you probably wont get them working unless someone can find a way to edit the rom directly and create a new key, which would be awesome but im sure nintendo would have implimented a system to stop this sort of thing.
I cant wait for Mario Kart!

I don;t care if it plays online or not. I plan on BUYING the game. I use the roms to see if I should buy a game or not. It served me well with Castlevania (I bought it later that day) and steered me away from Lunar: Dragon Crap. As a technical issue, it is good to analyze though, as it may offer clues to implementing WiFi into our own apps.

That's what I was thinking too. One step closer to a web browser or maybe an IRC chat program.

Still, I could see the uses of it. Would be best if we could dump our own games with the super card. Right now I have games I actually own on my super card as well, just so I don't have to carry around multiple little carts. But if it doesn't work with wifi, that isn't too big of a deal since I still plan on buying it.

I found a great article about WiFi on the DS at IGN.com...

http://ds.ign.com/articles/665/665128p1.html

It contains a step by step guide on setting up. The guy said it takes about 10 minutes and he was getting a range of 35 feet.

Also found a "review" of Mario Kart DS in the mailbag section...

I've been playing around on Mario Kart DS since this weekend with very few problems. I noticed on the message boards that you snoopy-snoops have been peeking around Nintendo's Wi-Fi website, and yes, my name (CraigIGN) appears showing that I'm blasting through the races against the world. Or at least, the world that's currently connected and having a copy of Mario Kart DS.

The problem with Mario Kart is that the online portion is extremely limited. The only way you'll be able to connect with me on a regular basis, outside of randomly connecting to me via "Worldwide Mode" is if you have my 12 digit Friend Code, and I have yours. If you have mine, you still won't be able to connect to me as a friend since I don't have yours. Knowing someone's online name isn't enough. Nintendo's system also forces the group of up to four players -- people can't choose who to play, or even enable a simple two or three player challenge. And even in random Worldwide match-ups, if I enjoyed racing against someone, I have no way of adding that person to my list of friends. There's no way of chatting with that person or finding out his email address to get that information after the fact, either.

Get Mario Kart DS because it's the best freakin' kart racer ever, with an incredible focus on single player and local multiplayer. Don't get it solely for its online component because you'll end up wanting way more than what's offered here.

I started this thread . and i am sad to read that it focused only on anti-piracy advices......usual stuff 13 year old  kids (who pirate all day long ) say with a stiff upper lip .... :-(((( .
anyway , my only question was this ....are you sure nintendo is going to include a code with every box of every game wifi enabled !!!!!
i think not .....the famous friend code should be in my opinion a hash of the mac address of every DS mixed with a fixed code velonging to the game itself, i see no reason therefore why the rom should behave differently from the phisical card.
given that i think nintendo is not really worried by the % of people pirating ds games.........camon how many supercard were sold anyway!!
hust my 2 cents
bye

My real non-pirate oriented question would be: Does flashme retain the origional MAC address... or is everyones flashme'd ds the sam machine ID code now.

ratx

Early flashme's were linked to your DS's ID ( mac based? ) I'd hope the flashme people have taken this into account... but I guess it shouldn't be that hard to write a little programme to patch the firmware again with a new one...  eg ppflash can generate a random one during patching

geo999

Actually im not looking forward to play multiplayer internet games with my ds (with roms rather than cartridges) but imagine how cool it would be if homebrew application could connect to home servers outside nintendo umbrella.......16 player doomDS sitting on the toilet bowl ... ;-))))

ratx

Cory: just researched the flashme MAC issue a little more... we're covered according to various sources... you can download a DS firmware explorer and have a look yourself... your MAC address is between 000030-000038 ( 0x000036 ) begins with 00 09  and ends at "FE 3F".

I've uploaded the firmware explorer to http://l33t.spod.org/ratx/DS/SC/misc

PC games companies do it. So it is a very good possibility that Nintendo will do it too

Guys, do you still remember what MK demo do to flashme  v4? It WRITES something at the FIRMWARE. It means they actually store some UNIQUE  information on our device.
