No more SL1 hole on newer DS's?

I read somewhere that there have been reports of new DS's without the SL1 bridge hole next to the battery. Makes sense if Nintendo wanted to make it that much harder to reprogram the firmware. Anyone hear anything on this, or perhaps come across a DS without the SL1 hole?

There were talks about it... but as far as I know this never happened. Even if they did, wouldn't be too hard to just take off the case and press the contact like that.

True. It would just suck to have to actually dismantle the DS to do the job. I was actually shocked when I found out how user friendly Nintendo made it for us to do this. I mean, remove the battery cover and a little sticker? That was just too good to be true.

I would not doubt that they do cover that hole up eventually tho. They may not stop the daring from opening the system, but I think the average person who would normally be abit afraid of flashing the unit the way we do now would NOT delve into taking the DS apart to do it. I sure would tho! :)

it would make flashing a DS much more inaccessible to the common user, as the DS, unlike the PSP will not function running from the power supply alone...
but its not worth their time, as if a person can flash his DS he generally already has a means of bypassing their copy protection to begin with...

I just think that it would be the logical move for the big N, after updating the firmware. They obviously knew that the old firmware's restrictions were being bypassed, and they made it abit harder to do this with newer firmware...although that has already been done (ie: passme2)

But now, next step I would think would be to cover that hole. I mean, that would be a simple plastic casting re-design that would not cost them much to do. I can imagine people drilling a hole in the plastic to get to SL1 without opening their system in the future.

Third step for them would most likely be to update the firmware again. At least games aren't forcing firmware upgrades like the PSP. That couldn't be possible with the DS, or could it?

Why wouldn't it be possible? If someone can program a bricker program to wipe out the firmware, what would stop nintendo games from upgrading the firmware (as long as it didn't need to modify anything in the protected area)

Guess it may be possible...if Nintendo wants to take Sony tactics. I remember early days when firmware was not even a thought. Damn technology!  :D

I don't think nintendo will... at least not for a little while. Nintendo took note of how much flack sony took for forcing people to upgrade their firmware. Instead of forcing people to upgrade to newer firmware, they can just quietly add it to the newer models. While it may upset people, it's at least not pissing off the existing user base.

There'd be no point - people could still use passme.

Would be a point if they blocked the hole and created a new version of firmware that passme 2 wouldn't work on. (there are actually people already looking for other holes for when nintendo eventually DOES patch that firmware hole in future versions)

Maybe no need to worry as I got the Mario Kart bundle last week and the hole is still there.
