It seems the main advantage of the "ultra" versions is the extra write speed, which isnt as important to us. I'll leave that out.

Sandisk SD
# Access time ms - 1.1
# Read AVG Mb sec - 8.13

Sandisk Ultra SD
# Access time ms - 0.9
# Read AVG Mb sec - 8.93

Sandisk Micro SD
# Access time ms - 1.1
# Read AVG Mb sec - 8.33

Sandisk Ultra Micro SD
# Access time ms - 1
# Read AVG Mb sec - 8.9

A very small difference in performance, it really comes down to the reader hardware efficiency.

Thanks for that, I bet it is access time that affects castlevania video (i mentioned in the other thread) as there is no way that video can need a 8+MB/s stream from the mem card, it must just pull a few bytes per game engine cycle. This is why other in-game videos don't suffer as the coding is different.

In Tony Hawks where you get the music track change slow-down read speed probably does matter. As the world needs to be streamed too. Though I  must say TH plays much better on my SC CF kingston ultra than my EZ4 Transcend x80miniSD, and the knigston ultra CF had a relatively un-remarkable read speed in thos tests.

But with the Sandisc microSD .1 is not really going to impove the situation by much. Maybe in the future.

wow.  if those figures are accurate (for microSD specs), then I have little hope for the supercard lite speed.  (see the mini-review thread)

I thought getting the ultra II would help.  Now I just hope that some miracle will happen with new firmware or patcher. haha.. good thing i have a g6 lite.

conquerearth

sneef, do you have yours yet? which microSD(s) will you be testing it with?

HaXor

wow i already have a micro sd card for my phone, so i just have to buy a DS lite and a Lite SC 8)

I was looking at the miniSD speeds and saw this  http://www.valuemedia.co.uk/popparts.htm?part=MSD1000D

Look at the access speed !  0.8m/s access speed, the fastest I have seen. Does anyone have one or can test one, i really love to know how it performsin an SCminiSD, even though the read/write speeds are not outstanding, i think it would perform well.

My Transcend x80 miniSD has a woefull 1.65 access speed :( Maybe that's why my EZ4 stutters so badly in Castlevania ect ... but it could be worse, if you look at some of the others, the access speed can be as bad as 2.65m/s (stutter fest)

btw.. does anyone know the access speed of the new ATP 1GB x80 microSD ?

I had a SanDisk 2GB miniSD and it was horrible! Animal Crossing stuttered to death and Tony Hawk was jittery. The Castlevania test was still frame with choppy audio so there is your results. I replaced it with an ATP ProMax 150X 2GB miniSD and everything was fixed! Castlevania test is now perfect and there is no lag in any game even Animal Crossing!

You must have had a faulty card or something. I've got a standard SanDisk 1GB MiniSD and Aninal Crossing was fine. TH ran a bit slow. Castlevania the video was a bit choppy, like about every few seconds it would breifly pause. Audio was fine though.

I beg to differ as I used two different cards both with the same lag until I put in my 150X miniSD. So why are I and everyone on this board and other boards mentioning the lag problem for, are we all off our rockers? You just have never played the real game cart. In the begining of Animal Crossing once it says to press start and you do you'll notice how it puts out the letters very slow and the background 3d kinda slows down a bit. Also when coming out of any building hold the direction pad and press run and you'll notice a pause. Those are the two main slowdowns in AC and for you not to have them while everyone else does is not possible. Other games have the problem as in Tony Hawk there is choppy framerates with music playing and in Metroid Prime Hunters free look to fast will make the framerate chug a bit. Unless you're using media 60X or higher you WILL have these problems.

Well like I said on GBAtemp (and others agree with me), you are greatly exagerating. Maybe if you play it side by side with the original game you may notice a bit. But unless you are comparing every game you play to an original cart side by side, it's a non issue because you aren't going to notice it. That said, when games like FF3 come out that use a lot of full motion video, you will want a faster card to be able to view it smoothly. But to say games are unplayable without a high speed card is rediculous and a massive exageration.

It's the memory access time that is important, some of these high speed sd variants still have crappy access times ..my 80x Transcend miniSD (which is nice and fast to write to on my PC) has 1.65 m/s access time and is quite crap, it  experiences all those problems you listed. Obviously you're ATP has a nice fast read speed but also has very fast access times (I think you can test it with HDTach). Just think of how big the Castlevania vid is and how long it plays for ? All the mem cards could theoratically play it in @2 seconds or under, but it calls for small amounts of data very often, this is where the access times matter.

The advice should be.. get a mem card as fast as possible but make sure it has <1.0 m/s access times. From you're description the ATP pro series seems to fit the bill, though I cannot find any info on it's access times.

edit.. Imagine a 100m race ... with 2 humans that run at the same fast speed, but  guy1 can react to the starter gun much faster then the  guy2.

scenario 1... The starter pistol goes off ... guy1 gets off first and has a tiny lead, they both finish the race virtually neck and neck, but guy1 pips guy2 because of his faster reaction at the start.

scenario2... The starter pistol goes off ... but the 2 guys only run a very short distance and stop and wait for the starter gun to go off again, this happens 100's or 1000's of times during the 100m race... now at the end guy1 has a huge lead over guy2 thanks to 1000's of faster reaction times starts.

Just a note: Black shoe polish works very well for dying plastic. I did my dvd burner with it. Sure it smelled funny for a few weeks, but held the color really well.

I just bought a MiniSD last week..... *cries* why didnt i wait for this :(

It's all the same, it just sticks out the bottom a bit... at least the media will be cheaper and bigger in GBytes.

i know. but it would of bin so much nicer if it fit perfectly. Especially when putting it in your pocket

i definately would of waited for this if i knew it was going to come out so soon :( im seriously dissapointed in myself! lol
