Here in Argentina we buy our Xboxes already modded, so we only get about 3 months of warranty, I've read that a lot of people who get the RROD fixed it with the xclamp fix, and to keep it cool they do some cooling mods, in my console I put the Whisper Max fans, running at 12v, and added another fan on top of the 3rd heatsink, the one that comes out of the main GPU heatsink and is connected with a heatpipe, so far it works perfectly. I also bought a fan speed regulator, because at 12v it's very noisy. So, yes, the x clamp fix works, but you have to do some other things to keep it working fine, because it already RROD'ed, any more damage on the components due to overheating may break it permanently.

where did you buy your fans from?

Well just got the xbox 360 and it does have the RROD, 3 rings. my newer xbox powersupply will not fit it to try that out but the light goes green when it is turned on (light on power supply).  It doesnt have the hdmi connection on it but that is ok.

It has a Hitachi drive in it. is this a good thing?

But it was manufactured in 10-31-2006 so it is under the 3 yr warranty for rrod. Calling xbox right now to send in for repair. hopefully will go well. Will post my response from them.

Also do you get the same xbox back after repair?

PERFECT, repair label printed will ship out on Tuesday!!!! love it, it costs me an edge card and a 2 gig microSD.

lol  thought so  ;)

congrats mate!!! :)

If the neighbors ask about it tell them you used it for spares lol if they find out you got it repaired for nothing they may ask for it back!

takes about a week btw (well thats what ours did although wasn't for RROD ...It was the drive not reading anything at all) :)

they also gave it a good cleaning and replaced the slightly battered facia plate ;)

question is  ....... will you keep it and mod it or just sell it and make a HUGE profit!

I will keep it and mod it, i would feel to guilty fixing and selling it. if i was going to do that, i would just give it back (though i thought about it) but it defeats the purpous of the reason i wanted it. The neighbor wont care, as it is not his kid, i will tell him that i did the xclamp repair and he could care less.

the boy is more excited about the ds cart.

I found a seller on ebay selling the hdmi version with rrod for VERY cheap with buy it now.... My brother and I bought all 3 that he was selling eventually.  Mine's working great, the other 2 should be headed back from MS any day.  I keep one "unmodded" which is the one I've been using for netflix... can't wait to get a "backup" again...

Sorry onekelly, didn't read your post, guess it doesn't matter now that you sent the console to MS, i bought the Whisper Max fans here in Argentina, was on a trip to Buenos Aires and bought them there. The other fan is a normal DC fan, 5x5cm, and around 2cm deep, a perfect fit for the extended GPU heatsink. If you mod it to play backups you should think about doing a cooling mod too, as you wouldn't have the warranty anymore, what I reccomend is to remove the heatsinks, sand them with a 600 grit sandpaper (after cleaning them), remove the thermal paste and apply a high quality one, like Arctic Silver 5. Then, if you feel like it and don't mind the noise, connect the fans to a 12v source, there are several sources in the 360 mainboard, the most used are the ones in the DVD drive power connector and under the 360 power connector. If the noise is too loud you can use an LM78XX voltage regulator to knock down a few volts, a 7810 or a 7809 should lower the noise considerably, or you could adapt one of those speed regulators that are used on PCs. If you have any other doubt e-mail me (my email is my username at gmail).

Just waiting for connectivity kit and probe to show up along with the VIA card. Ordered 20 pk of verbatim from newegg with 10% off and free shipping (something like 21 bucks).

When backing up with imgburn (i have a pioneer 111d burner), do these rules still apply or is this outdated info?

From Dec 2007 from afterdawn forums

QuoteREMEMBER you must have a bitsetting capable DVD+R DL drive. If you do not you may be able to upgrade its firmware (wow a legit firmware flash!) See here for a LOT of drive firmwares: hxxp://tdb.rpc1.org/

To set the booktype in DVDInfoPro:

Start DVDInfoPro
CLick on the +RW icon on the top row
Select DVD-ROM
Press button marked "Change +RDL Mode"
Press Close

or is this way old school as imgburn has been updated many times since this time in dec '07?
