It seems the Android development community has beaten Mathieulh to the punch with a free PS3 exploit solution.  Android PSFreedom has been released and currently works with Bravo, N1, G1, and Sapphire phones.  More Android phones will get support soon I'm sure. I still have my old G1 laying around, so all I need is a copy of PS3 "Backup manager" and I should be ready to give this a shot, perhaps later this evening. I'll be testing this with an original 60GB PS3 that has not been registered to my PSN account.

EDIT:

Well I can personally confirm PSFreedom for G1 has worked to hack my PS3 test unit.  Apparently PSGroove can be ported to any device with a programmable USB port. There was something oddly satisfying to me about hacking my PS3 with my hacked Android G1.

The exploit is amazingly simple to use. Pressing power then eject in quick succession was no problem and worked every time for me. Of course you'll want to install Backup Manager (manager.pkg) or you can't do much with a hacked PS3. Backup Manager is also very simple to use, not much to the interface yet.  Trying to backup a PS3 game to my G1 memory card was very slow. I recommend using a USB harddrive. The internal harddrive seems to be the most fail safe as far as game compatibility. I'm looking forward to some good PS3 homebrew and emulators now.  :)

I finally got to play with this. I used the TI-84 Calculator method and it worked like a charm. It was simple to use and it was great finally playing some games from the hard drive on this damn machine. Took almost 6yrs but it's finally happening!

Some of you may be looking at the PS3 JailBreak, PSGroove, and PSFreedom game compatibility lists . . .

http://www.ps3news.com/subdomain.php?pagename=ps3-jailbreak
https://spreadsheets.google.com/lv?key=tqjzdwQGOhsHl_KH0KiEC3w&toomany=true

You will notice that some PS3 game rips can only be played from the PS3 internal harddrive.  That's all fine and dandy if you own (or borrowed) an original PS3 game disk, as PS3 Backup Manger will allow you to make backups to the PS3 internal harddrive.

However what does one do if a PS3 game is downloaded and needs to be moved to the PS3 internal harddrive? There is a solution.

One of the reasons some PS3 games can only be run from the PS3 internal harddrive is because they contain files larger than 4GB. Currently PS3 Backup manager only supports external USB media formatted as FAT32. Game files larger than 4GB can't be copied to an external USB harddrive.  In fact, if you've download a PS3 game that contains files larger than 4GB you can't even unzip it to a PC harddrive unless it has been formatted NTFS.

Conversely some of you may be making backups of your original PS3 games disks onto your internal PS3 harddrive because they contain files larger than 4GB. So, how does one copy these backups to a PC when they contain files larger than 4GB?

The solution to this problem is a homebrew application called PS3 FTP server. Currently PS3 FTP is the only other homebrew available for the PS3 besides Backup Manager.  PS3 FTP is delivered as a *.pkg file and installs on your PS3 the same way Backup Manager (manager.pkg) is installed.

Once PS3 FTP server is installed on your PS3 you can run it from XMB.  PS3 FTP is a little buggy and crashes from time to time, but gets the job done. If the PS3 FTP server crashes you can simply restart it again.  I recommend using a good FTP client like FileZilla that supports resuming FTP transfers. I also recommend not using a wireless connection because it is 10 times slower.

Create the folder GAMEZ under the directory /dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345
(if you've already ripped at least one PS3 game to the internal harddrive then this directory will already be created)

Copy PS3 game backups to and from your PS3 in this directory . . .

/dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/

An example game might look like this . . .

/dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/BCES00510

The game folder name doesn't have to be like BCES00510 does it? For instance I play my games off the hard drive in folders named like this Gamez/inFamous/(game files in here).

Yes, you can rename the sub folders inside the /dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/ directory.

Great! I was worried we were gonna have to keep up with the BCE4545 stuff. That makes it harder to tell at a glance what you have on the hard drive. Also did you see u can now play the games off a single layer DVD-R or a single layer BR disc! Stuff is progressing fast. Hope they get dlc hacked too like jtag'd XboX 360 have it.

No, I didn't read about that.  I'm not sure I want to bother with burning DVD or BR. Still very cool!  How is it done, simply burn a backup to a DVD?

Apparently after you burn it it to disc, the game shows up in backup manager and you can launch it from there.

Play PS3 Backup game disc!

Requirements:

1) Jailbroken PS3 with Backup Manager, running v3.41 firmware!
2) Any Original Game Disc or Any Jailbroken game files
3) Nero or any similar program on your PC.
4) USB HDD

If you have your jailbroken game files skip to step 4

Step1: Launch Backup Manager and Backup the original disc to the Ext. HDD

Step2: Plug the Usb HDD to the pc and Browse to "X:/GAMEZ/[title_id] Ex. "G:/GAMEZ/BLES00188"

Step3: Copy the contents of the [TITLE_ID] DIRECTORY to New folder on your desktop
* Contents of [title_id] a)PS3_DISC.sfb B) PS3_UPDATE C)PS3_GAME

Step4: Burn the Contents of the jailbroken game to any type of disc
* Contents of [title_id] a)PS3_DISC.sfb B) PS3_UPDATE C)PS3_GAME

Step5: Insert the Disc in the Jailbroken PS3

Step6: Launch Backup Manager and load the Disk
* Note: The disc icon will not appear

Now it should launch and you can update and play without any problems!

NOTES:

1) You can use Internal Hdd and copy the files using FTP Homebrew.

2) It only can read the jailbroken games that was ripped from discs using backup manager. It can't read a game that was not backed up by backup manager.

3) If the backup manager could not read the disc, then try launching the backup manager first, then insert the disc. If this still doesn't work, insert the disc while you are at the XMB and wait until the PS3 reads it as a data disc, then launch backup manager.

4) It has been confirmed by MRelectro713 that it works with updates and saves with no problems.

5) Thanks for XsilentX help in writing my first news post!

I noticed iPhone 2G-3G & iPod Touch 1G PS3 Jailbreak in now available on Usenet newsgroups.

I saw it was out but could not find it. I don't think it is working with backup manager though is it? Or did someone mod to work with it? I think the initial release was psgrove or whatever, that doesn't work with the bm.

the hack works on three iOS devices only for now, namely: iPod touch 1G, iPhone EDGE (the first iPhone) and the recently-outdated iPhone 3G. The device must, of course, be jailbroken.

Prerequisites for the hack includes: VMware Player, Ubuntu 10.04, OpeniBoot, WinSCP and OpenSSH. You can catch the guide posted here at PS3Mod.
