Quote from: "onarum"the only thing this one improved over the original is the adjustable brightness, i don't give a shit to design, and jesus all i can think off is that they left this feature out of the original on purpose just so they could kindof justify a redesign, i mean seriously, how hard is to think on adjustable brightness, it was a must if you ask me, i remenber right after getting my DS(wich is a true original 1.0 FW hehe) i was really disappointed for not having some way to adjust brightness

None of Nintendo's Gameboy's had a screen brightness control if I recall.  The GBA SP had an option to turn off the front-light with a button (the DS can do the same on the main menu), but nothing on brightness control.  Sony started it off on the PSP, and now Nintendo is copying off them.

And the GBA slot is still there.

From what I've read:

Its just a little smaller, lighter.
4 levels of screen brightness control (PSP has 3 levels, 4 when charging).
Stylus now inserts in the side of the machine.
Start button moved to the side of the system, and probably changed to a slide-switch like the GBA SP.
Location of microphone moved as well.

what I heard is the firmware is fixed, not write-able.so maybe some new PassMe-like things but FlashMe will not work on DSLite.

Critical_Impact

They'd have to have something that allows you to write onto the firmware otherwise it'd be a pain for nintendo do flash their ds's or reflash them. There may be an internal SL1 contact in these new ds's so you may have to dissasemble your ds to flash it maybe, also the firmware would have to be writeable otherwise you couldnt save wifi settings

uhmm... i better get me at least one more current DS as zector says then, just in case my DS die on me someday(wich will happen eventually).
SC CF + 1GB Kingston CF + flashed NDS = a whole lot of fun.

Oh it will be hacked.  There is no question that we'll be running Supercard on it within a WEEK of it being released publically.  I have faith. :)

They HAVE to be able to write to the flash or you can't save your WiFi settings.

As for the SL-1 contact, it'd be very easy to remove them and instead of flashing the firmwares AFTER installation to do so BEFORE the chips are installed onto the DS main board.

Also remember, GBA flash carts are the first generation of DS backup. You can be certain there will be later devices that use true DS flash carts. That is, take out the GBA card from the equation. Once you do that, you won't have to worry about altering the firmware.

Critical_Impact

Isnt the MK3 sort of like that already, isnt it like a superpass with the ability to read roms from and sd card?

Therion

rumor said most flash carts brands are developing next generation DS backup cards ,some of them will be DS-Slot card  and maybe using miniSD.But I think the DSLite's release will delay the developing.

Critical_Impact

I'd prefer sd as i've already got a ton and i'd rather not have to buy more minisds

Nyutan

I betcha this is a hoax. The Details are Sketchy. And Yet it's not April first. How ever. Nintendo Didn't need to redesign Anything. "Selling like hotcakes."
It's Bogus.

Yeah, I bet the ease of hacking the first ones just made Nintendo all warm and fuzzy inside...

They stopped making the originals for awhile, and let the high holiday business eat up some of the stockpiles, that gives an excuse for a new design to rebuild stocks.

AnalogMan

[sarcasm]Yes, I disagree with it being redesigned so it must be a hoax and just cause it's on the official Japanese Nintendo site doesn't mean squat.[/sarcasm]

it looks ok to me but i would have loved the inclusion of an analogue stick

The MK3 still has to have a GBA flashcart in it to work (at least from my understanding).

looks pretty good, but i'm not going to spend money when I have a perfectly good DS right here!

also, is anyone else satisfied with the screen brightness of the original? It's not as good as the newer GBAs, but its pretty good nonetheless; loads of improvement over the original SP and lightyears ahead of the original GBA.
