Old DS with Flashme Lite firmware = Brightness settings?????

if that is true, I'll eat my underwear.  just because the lite firmware (and flashme lite) have an instruction set referring to backlight brightness does not mean that you can control the brightness on any DS with this instruction set.

If the code instructs the hardware to adjust something that doesn't even exist (on the old DS hardware), it will probably just have some kind of error.  which is exactly what happens if you try to install flashme lite beta on an old DS.

[EDIT] after posting here, i went and searched up on the issue.. olimar has this to say:

An updated flashme will not change anything. I keep saying this... it's a HARDWARE issue, not software. No amount of tweaking the firmware will magically give you backlight controls (unless you drop in PWM'd backlight code, but that's not the same thing).

This assumes that the hardware isn't there...
But maybe it is.
It's weird thing to put in and not use, but maybe they were planning on using it in later games...
If you think about it that way it makes perfect sense.
If nintendo released a new console that they'd say: "Ohh, let's make this exclusive for this console."
Cause I'm sure a lot of people choose a lite over a original because of the screen.

But then again... Where did nintendo intend to go with the idea in the first place.
very weird.

Personally, I think this is a fluke... but you never know

Oh yeah, it works alright. But you have to have a certain firmware version for your DS. Luckily, one of mine was a version5. I tried it and it indeed works.

jbullfrog

this is amazing!  IF they can get this to work on all firmwares...i won't need to buy a ds lite.  I have green screens; this means firmware v3 right?
M3 Simply
Onyx Black DS lite
1 GB Japanese Kingston microSD

Yes.

so does that mean the v5 ds's have the better screens that the lite has?  or does it just have the brightness control setting?

How can I tell what version my DS is? I think that the pictochat test was yellow before I flashed, what version is that? It's funny how ppl didnt beleive this was possible even before the lite was out, we thought it could of been possible. I hope my DS is a V5, probably not, just my luck.....

EDIT: just loaded flashmev7 and it tells me my original firmware was v2 so no luck here...
ilver NDS w/Flashme V.6
Supercard SD v1.61 firmware
1 GB coreMicro high speed card

Yes.

Correction, if you already flashed your DS firmware then the pictochat test is invalid.

BACK TO TOPIC:

Don't worry about it, I'm sure there will be a new firmware release (or patch) soon if this indeed works.

754boy:
How does the brightness increase look on the old DS?  Does the screen get washed out?

EDIT: Come to think of it, all we would need is No-FlashMe to restore FW5.

Hello, so, all the DS "Phat" Pure White are V5? The ones at Lik-Sang. Does anyone know?, this could mean that some of us won't have to buy a DS Lite for better lightning in the screens.

If anyone tried, which DS do you have?

Thank you.

yo can modify your backlight with the 2 holes near sl1, each hole modifies one screen's brighness, anyway I know people who have installed lite firmware on a common ds, it has to be v5, and no, it's not yet possible for any ds, old ds can regulate its light, but they gave been able to install lites firmware in v5 because the lighting regulator is the same on v5 and lite, not in v4 and under, though it is possible in other way, viewtiful joe allows changing the backlight

gamekill

What do you mean you can set the Original DS screen brightness higher using the two back holes near SL1????? Only V5 or every1? How can it be done?

Mine is a first-generation Silver DS that came with Metroid Prime Demo.

I'm really interested in seeing how this evolves...  I bought a DS that had already been flashed with v7 stealth.  Any way I can check the original firmware version?
