Play-Asia is taking pre-orders for the Opera web browser for the DS: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-dy-49-en-70-1gba.html

Ordered mine and shipping was less then $3 bucks!

Thundrestrike

so the japanese is the same as english?

before i pre-order, I gotta see if its gonna work with a SC, because if it does, I'm gonna use the rom until it comes out in America.

If not, I will order the Japanese from Play-Asia. How long will it be out of stock after release?

(dont worry, I WILL buy one of the versions. Either the Japanese if the rom doesn't work. And if the rom works, I will be ocupied with the Japanese one until it come out in America when i will buy it.)

I think this browser will be very good.  Someone already did a quick review of the browser and said its fast and good and easy to use.

I don't think you would be able to because it has a RAM expansion..

socket

Is it a "RAM" expansion, or will it be sort of a caching expansion?  My guess is that it will be eventually emulated, there are some pretty smart people out there.

THE ROM IS USELESS

This is because it needs the ram expansion to work and connect properly to the internet or it will no work.

A memory extension cannot be "emulated".  The only way I can see any of us running this on our flashcarts is if someone disassembles and modifies the Opera ROM to allocate memory differently.

Also, from the screenshots on Play-Asia, it would appear that the Japanese version of the browser has english menus available.  I wish Nintendo would let us know if we should bother waiting for a U.S. release.  Any thoughts?

Well, my point is is that it may not be "memory" in the PC sense.  And what I meant by "emulated" was that my guess is that someone will figure out how to use the flashcart's storage instead of the expansion GBA card.

I'm not sure what you mean by "PC" memory, but whether it's RAM memory inside of a game cart, a TiVo, or a computer, it maintains the same properties.

As far as hacking the Opera ROM to use the flashcart instead of the expansion included with the commercial cartridge, two factors immediately come to mind...

- The extent that an NDS ROM can be decompiled and then modified
- The difference in the memory found in the various flashcarts on the market

Flashcarts like the SC read NDS ROMs directly from the SD or CF card, meaning that the memory ordinarily used to launch GBA roms on the cart is free.  If the Opera RAM expansion cart is nothing more than a standard GBA cart, then modifying the browser to work as a ROM seems possible, although unlikely.  In this case, I'd love to be proven wrong!

I know that RAM is RAM (when I said memory in the PC sense, I meant RAM) but we don't know what this expansion card is, or how it will work yet.
All I was saying was that I wasnt sure it was actually a "RAM" expansion.  If it is instead storage, like web page caching, I think it may be possible to do.

There's no way to give any solid speculation on whether or not it will be able to be dumped and used on the SC.  We have to wait until it is out.  And let the nerdy programmers play around with it for a while.  Remember all of the Genesis emulation naysayers?

I was honestly shocked when the DS support was release for the SC.  I could not believe how quickly the team got saving working directly to the flash media, etc.  There have been some huge advancements and I don't think we can write running a dump of Opera off yet.

I'm going to guess it will take more effort to make the DS Opera browser work with SuperCard than it's worth.  This is why I pre-ordered one.  I think I've read that it's only going to be $25 when it arrives in the US. Just buy one. You might also wait for a better homebrew browser.

darkuni

Oh, I'll own one ... But I'm so DAMN LAZY .. I don't like to carry ANYTHING around but the Lite with Supercard in and maybe a real DS game that suffers slow down on the SC.  Opera will require AT LEAST porting around the RAM cart :(

Kicks ass there is a lite version tho.  Wouldn't it rock if we could use the RAM to run DS code off of ?  Heh...
