can confirm that the v5 model of DS get four brightness levels enabled in the Bios menu.  How can you apply these brightness levels in-game though??

If I change them in the Bios and run a game after, then I ALWAYS get the second brightest setting...

help appreciated!

WARNING:

That little adjustor for the "normal ds" light is actually the timer adjuster for the lcd discharge

IE: increasing the time makes stuff look brighter since the charge on the lcd is not dishcahrged as quick

the reported flicker is due to the lcd dishacrging too quickly so each lcd unit flashes slower than the minimum refresh rate of the human eye

MESSING WITH THIS SWITCH CAN RUIN/SHORTEN UR SCREENS LIFE

IGN reported that a badly adjust one could reduce the life of the LCD:

"A positive and negative voltage controls Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs). The "contrast control" that you are referring to is actually a flicker control. The adjustment is used to synchronize the positive and negative voltages. If these voltages are out of adjustment then the LCD will no longer respond correctly. The result will be an excess charge built up in the liquid crystal and permanently damage the LCD. The excessive charge gives the appearance of a brighter screen because the liquid crystal is not reacting properly to the voltages applied. When the adjustment of the voltages is correct the changing polarities will not allow a charge to build up, which prolongs the LCD life.

This adjustment is set by the manufacturer or must be performed by a qualified Nintendo Technician using proper equipment (Proper lighting, special tools, test equipment and software). Adjusting the flicker without the proper tools and lighting will put the voltages out of sync and may cause damage to the unit."

omaemad, thanks a lot for the deatailed explaination, I figured that those adjustments were not for the screen brightness, I'm glad I havent touched those at all ;)

well, I'm using the "bulb-icon" from within the DS bios menu...not the hardware buttons!

can changing the brightness in the menu cause damage on a v5 (Flashme v7 enabled) as well??

Is there a way to know what version the NDS is from the box? I remember when I was into the PSP
awhile back certain boxs have different letter or code that referred to different FW like 1.5, 1.52, 2.0,
2.1+.

ohhhhh boy... can't wait for a DSL SC.

Just do take me out, way easier.
And btw, why some DS's are able to have those different settings after Flahsme installation is (If I remember correctly) because newer DS units have the same chip as the new and improved lite, FW version has nothing to do with it.

Yea you're right about the new chip that manages the backlight. What I'm assuming is that if a phat ds was shipped with FWv5 then it
would have the new chip. Of course this is all based on assumptions.
