after sending it in for the cracked hinge, as I hinted about in the topic requesting a dump of the original ds lite firmware.

in any case, I just wanted to let everybody know that I received a brand new ds lite from nintendo in place of my old one.  My two dead pixels (which never bothered me) are gone, and the bottom screen, which was somewhat crooked before, is now perfectly straight.  There are no scratches.

And most importantly, the hinge on the new system no longer 'clicks' when folding open the unit. It's still sturdy and stiff as far as staying in an open position...it just doesn't click anymore.

i also got my ds lite back from nintendo too just over a week ago, first thing i noticed was that half of the supercard lite went straight in with ease unlike on my earlier ds lite which was not so nice in this regards.

Also for the first time i heard the clicking sound when closing ds lite which of course i did not heard on my previous ds lite.

nusilver

yeah, i also noticed that the supercard lite goes in a lot easier, until about halfway down.

i really want to avoid the faulty ds lites. would it be 100% safe to buy a black one?

pte

No.

The color doesn't mean a thing.

This is going to be a really dumb question but I want to know for future reference. Did you Reflash your Ds with the orignal firmware before you sent it in. Or left the modified firmware in place. Also how old was your DS before you sent it in? Did you need a reciect/ proof of purchase? And one more question. How much did it cost?(just the repair/replacement).

I can partially answer your question(s):

Did you need a reciect/ proof of purchase?
Yes, you do need to have proof of purchase as i sent a photocopied version of my receipt.

How much did it cost?
My DS Lite A and B buttons had gone very soft thus a little un-responsive and i sent it to nintendo who then sent me a new one.

Oh, BTW i did not pay a penny except for when you sent the package.

When I sent in my phat DS for a dead pixel, I didn't need a proof or purchase/receipt. Also they sent me a prepaid FedEx thing to use so I didn't pay a cent. I did my RMA online, btw.

okay, to answer your questions.

I got my dslite when the system came out.  I purchased it at midnight from Walmart; for reference, my wife's system, which also has developed a *small* crack, was shipped from bestbuy.com on launch.

there is currently no way to flash the ds lite back to its original firmware...read my other thread for the details, but i noflashme'd the system anyway, which ended up breaking many of the ds lite's functions.  flashme_stealth is actually not very stealthy, so there was no way i was going to send it in that way.  no way.  noflashme is a much better bet, because even if they were to send your original system back to you, at least you could flashme again.

i didn't need a receipt to have nintendo replace my ds lite, and the replacement was free.  just make sure you let them know that you've been putting your trust in their products for decades or however long, and how you've always been satisfied with their products before, so this cracked hinge thing is baffling to you...something like that oughta work.

I also requested my prepaid UPS label from Nintendo to send my DS Lite in, but I haven't received it yet. Thus far, the only thing I had to do was put in the code number on the bottom of my DS Lite. No receipt necessary.

I reflashed my DS Lite to flashme_stealth, and I'm not sure what nusilver means by it's not very stealthy, as is it appears to be exactly the same to me when I first got it. I've got both a cracked hinge and a crack on the right shoulder, but my buttons still feel great, and everything else is near new, so I'm hoping they can fix it for me.

One question though: For those of you who had it repaired, does it appear that the problem won't happen again? I assume no one has had it long enough to know that for sure, but Nintendo's got quite a problem if these problems reoccur.

nusilver

teknicz - seriously - get flashme_stealth off of your system if you're sending it to nintendo.

first of all, flashme_stealth fades in so if you're not using the same brightness setting on your ds lite that fms starts at, it's quite obviously not the original firmware; also, there is a brief moment of white screens before the health warning - whereas with the regular firmware the health warning up immediately.

i wouldn't be telling you this if i didn't deliberate over it carefully before sending my system in.

as far as your one question, i can tell you, based on just the feel of my new hinge, that the problem won't be happening again.  that doesn't mean nintendo's universally installed these new hinges in their newers units.  as far as i'm concerned, i got lucky.

i just sent mine out with flashme stealth for a faulty d-pad. if they figure it out that it's on there what are they going to do? not send it back lol, or maybe flash it with some un-flashable firmware? doubt it. but if they don't figure it out and fix my d-pad then yay for me. all it cost me was the $7 shipping so far, no big deal to me.

i'd assume that there is no need for a receipt for the ds lite because i figure the point of that is to check if it's within the 12 month warranty time, except all ds lites are withing that time currently

I sent my DSLite in because of the hinge crack, and they sent me one with a dead pixel.    I am currently waiting for a replacement for that one.

What are the odds right? But hey you know that problems happen. It's kinda like sending back a steak because it's not done right and then when you get it back it still isn't right !

Thanks for the concern. I don't exactly know what you mean by the same brightness settings that fms starts at, I flashed my DS Lite before I made any changes to the system. Hell, the first time I turned it on, after charging it for the required amount of time, was to flash it.

My health warning comes up immediately.

But what the hell, it isn't difficult to run noflashme, and flash it again after I get it back. It'll take me 10 minutes tops, so I will be taking your advice and noflashing it, thank you.

Better safe than sorry.
