moonshell problems (Supercard CF)

Hi,

I recently got my Supercard CF and just got the PassKey device, running on an early DS with old firmware. I got plenty of GBA & DS homebrew to work (games, apps) as well as testing out some rom dumps, which also work, so I know I'm at least doing the process right.

I got the SC CF moonshell package, newest version, I've tried to load it on just about every possible way and every time it boots but stops at an error message saying:
"An error was detected while trying to access the disc or a file." etc..

Console says:
"Init FileSystem
FileMaxCount=256
not found EXFS"

I can't imagine I'm alone with this problem. Maybe the way I'm loading it on is wrong? (got the same results using the Supercard software and just directly dumping to CF)

Welcome to scdev!

You do not want to run moonshell or any homebrew through supercard software. Also is your CF formatted to fat 16? Also the newest version of moonshell (1.41) gives you an error on the bottom screen but then goes away, I take it this is not what happened to you?

Also, did you get moonshell from the moonshell tutorial or from somewhere else?

Did you put the shell folder in the root directory on your CF card, it needs to be there.

Looking at the global.ini did you change something in there? max file count is 256. How many files are on your CF card?

automx

format is FAT (since it's not FAT32, i guess thats 16).

i get an error but it never goes away. i don't have over 100 files, i prolly have maybe 50 total only 1 of which is multimedia. shell dir and everything is in place, i've been careful to read everything.

as far as versions go:
tried the package from the tutorial
tried another package
tried the official site's prog to generate the CF version
tried patching --^ since the original didnt work
etc.. nothing is fixing it  :(

Hiya

I got exactly the same error with a CF that worked fine for other SuperCard GBA/NES/NDS purposes.   I bet you can't access the CF filesystem with DSOrganize (blue) and most other homebrew?  (Although dslinux works -- as that seems to be based on different CF access code?)

It would appear that the homebrew code library that handles the card access is a little fussy about the make/model of the compact flash card.  In the end, I bought a new card, a Kingston Elite Pro 1Gb (£15.99 in the UK - about US$25?), and now all homebrew works just fine.

I dare say that, like mine was, your CF card just isn't compatible with the homebrew?

Hope this helps.

automx, Like jewelie said about CF compatibility is a good start. Do you have another CF to try this out?

Lately I have seen alot of posts that persons are having issues with homebrew and writing to the CF filesystem, etc..

automx

i guessed that might be the cause (even moonshell says it). i've been running on an old 128mb before going out to buy a 2gb or 4gb card. will a 4gb work with SC CF?

thanks for the help.

I do not know, but search the site for more info. I am sure someone has asked that before.

one 2gb CF card later, problem solved! yay. thanks.

Glad it worked out for you! Moonshell is a great program!

Which card was it that worked?  May help other people in a similar if you list the details of the card that works.  :)

sure, it's a Patriot 2gb card, i believe it's a type 2. not a brand i had heard of, but obviously good enough to work.
