I heard Kingston's have a pretty big difference, but I don't actually have one so I can't confirm that.

For what ever reason. My Kingston Japan runs just fine with x30 over my Taiwan one which maxes at x25...

My Sandisk vanilla is even worse ....23...

-R4DS - 1gb Sandisk (cn)

I just bought 3 SCDS and 3 kingston 1gb micro sd.
The ones I received are the RED pcb scds.
The kingstons are taiwan labeled

SDC/1GB

TAIWAN

I get the card is too slow for use error,
so these cards are worth the money that I paid (16.38) .

I ordered these from Ingram Micro (I'm a computer dealer) so I know they aren't fake, they just suck.

Final Fantasy 3 won't run and Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow is skippy city.

I'm gonna order something tomorrow, anyone able to tell me what I should? (newegg preferred)

And does anyone have a source for microsd to minisd converters?

sonicwind

anybody use the A-data 2GB one from newegg since its pretty cheap now.

Quote from: "SuperCardStore"None of the Transcend I have sold (sourced directly from Transcend) worked with any of the Slot-1 cards I sell.

Chris,
Do you know if those were Transcend 80x or regular Transcend cards?

The only microSD card I can get in town is a Transcend 80x, so I'm wishing that all the scary stuff I have read about Transcend cards and Supercard DS ONE is about the regular Transcend cards.

Regular Transcend.
Any good supplier will always replace a card that doesn't work - I know that a lot of mobile phones are picky so they must do it quite often, so why not take your console with you when you buy?  Any brand that is actually a Toshiba (marked SD-CO1G JAPAN for 1Gb, SD-CO2G JAPAN for 2GB etc) works fine in my direct experience of several brands.

Whilst I'm writing this....

'80x' and 'Ultra' marking don't seem to make any performance difference - I wish I knew why the cards are unreadable.  They hang at the loader stage and so will not boot to the menu, or they boot to the menu and freeze when beginning to run something.

I think flash memory is like floppy diskettes in this respect - however poor the quality, the media should at least be readable as the rules for how the media is formatted are exact.  I guess there must be something about the layout of the media that the Slot-1 firmware can't handle (or a bug in the read buffer), and that all the Slot-1 cards are using the same firmware.  When the SuperCards introduced DMA to their firmware, everything sped up, so I guess that's what needed here.

I also guess that the actual firmware designer reads this forum (or someone capable of disassembly) - once the bug is squashed, all the cards will be readable, and faster.

If a card was 1000 times faster it would not seem to make a difference - it's like loading a short document into your word processor - the speed of your disk drive makes no real difference nowadays.  It's the CPU horsepower that gives you the experience.

Thank you very much for the fast reply! I'll take this unopened 80x back to the shop look for a Toshiba downtown.
It would be great if I could try the cards, but formatting and getting the SC stuff into the card for testing would be a pain. I don't know if they would let me do that.

I can see your picture, about the reading speeds, and it makes a lot of sense to me. Wish I had the time to study these firmwares and do it for myself, but sadly I'm not a student any more.

i got pretty confused. I was used to use an APACER 150x  Regular SD on my SC SD. So i got a micro SD (256mb) for my EZ-V as well. But the microsd seems to slow to handle cleanroms, hybrid work perfectly though.

My question now is,.. how can i see what the speed of my card is when it wasn't written anywhere on the box it came in, nor on the card it self.

Is there a benchmark program for micro sd speedtesting?

Measurements are often done based on the fact that the memory card appears as a disk drive in Windows, so people use freeware like www.hdtune.com
Check that the throughput of your USB Reader is faster than the micro-SD card though!  People seem to get different results with different hardware and that could be one reason.  I've noticed different results on the same PC using the same memory but different reader/writers...
I don't think the Slot-1 flashcard is using a speed check to reject some memory though, I think it's a bug in the firmware, so I don't know what use the 'benchmark' results will be - for instance, the Transcend I stocked had average-to-good read/write and access time results, work fine with the Slot-2 cards, but don't work at all with Slot-1 flashcarts...

jmr

my Transcend 80x works great it was slightly choppy in Animal Crossing until i formated it in FAT with 64kb clusters & now it works at full speed

hijoputismo

Oh really jmr? That makes me a lot more comfortable.
We're talking scds1 here, right?
I was a bit happy about FAT32, but if it has to be sacrified, I won't make a drama of it.

BTW, are Animal Crossing and the first Castlevania good games to test? Any other I should try?

jmr

yeah im using it with the scds1 & the 12.29 loader
when you use the auto set up the card only get a 2x score (which is rubbish)
i playing my games at increments all the way up to x32 & all settings work the same
so i just the speed at 16 in the middle & its fine

hijoputismo

Oh, then if I can't get a better one I'll be keeping this one.
Thank you! That was most helpful here.
