Hi

Does anyone know of a free, easy-to-use program that will convert a Dvd to a "Standard" video file?

Simple question, but I have a feeling my answer won't be so simple.

i use DVD Decrypter & FairUse Wizard 2.5 & get fantastic results

you have to use DVD Decrypter to dump the dvd to a ISO then use FairUse Wizard

DVD Decrypter (find it yourself)
http://mirror05.x264.nl/celtic_druid/force.php?file=./fu2.5-setup.exe
celtic druid decided to share his personal build (link above) with no trojan init

do not get FairUse Wizard from the main site the free version has a trojan init http://www.fairusewizard.com

ill do you a little guide if you want its very easy

EDIT
removed link to DVD Decrypter just incase your county does not let you make copys of your dvds

maby not the best idea to share decrypter in an link here as they authorities that be quickly shut them down  :(

celtics a good mate btw ;)

DVDShrink is excellent. Extracts all the VOBs, gets rid of the rubbish and the extracted can be burnt directly in Nero burning ROM.

if by "standard" video file you mean something like mpeg-4 (in avi container, or mp4, etc..) which all the portable media players and windows media player can play, then what I usually use is Gordian Knot.   It is not that easy to use, but it does have step by step instructions.

it is not a single program, but a shell which runs a series of applications which bring you from DVD with encrypted VOB's to an excellently transcoded output file.  The results are amazing compared with the easy 1 step transcoders.

If you really want something easy, and you only need the file to be able to be played on your computer (because the file type created by this app may not play on every device), try Nero Recode.  It is part of the Nero suite, and it is fast, and very simple.  The results are very good.

Shrink only works well on disks that have little no protection it will fall over at the latest ARcoSS disk protection and other types shrink is good to use once the files have been actually ripped you would need to use DVD DECRYPTER first or DVD FAB DECRYPTER or ANYDVD as SHRINK alone does not have any CCS decoding abilitys  :)

Again with RECODE it too needs unencrypted vob files to work from or protection free ... why ??  ......

..... for everyones information RECODE = SHRINK its the shrink engine under the hood  :D

Its made by the same author he was picked up by AHEADS recruiting department long ago hence the production of SHRINK dissapeared and RECODE was released as part of the NERO package :)

so to summerise usually you need to DECODE before you can ENCODE  :)

try DVDFab Decrypter also using ANYDVD for stronger
(ARcoSS) protections  :)

Additional here RECODE technically isnt FREE its part of NERO ULTRA and thats commercial software :(

anymore video questions just ask  :)

It's not so easy to use, but mencoder is free and can probably do what you want plus more.  There's probably a windows frontend floating around somewhere.

kkan

mencoder is supported and utilised by freeware SUPER CONVERTOR  :)

find it here rapid shared by me the later versions seem to be problematic with a lot of people  :(

its also great for FLV file to video format conversion and for video to mobile video too  :)

password for rar = kkan  :)

Thanks for the info on DVDshrink- maybe I've just been lucky so far. I only use it for backing up children's DVDs (which is the only ones we buy) as they are generally flung all over the place and get scratched. As we have an expensive but fickle player, this does not help at all.

Yeah, i use anydvd for the disk decryption and then use dvdshrink and dvd decrypter for burning the dvd. But i usually only burn the movie, not all the extra stuff or menus.

But this is getting way off topic if you want a standard video file, which is i am assuming you mean an avi file.

CladDVD .NET

It rips to "*.VOB". You can rip chapters as separate VOBs or the whole movie as one. If you're just trying to get it to work on your computer, open it in a media player by whatever way you can. I dunno if Windows Media Player has built-in VOB detection, but there's a chance it'll run if you drag it in. If not, play around with different programs. Most programs that run DVDs off of your drive will run a .VOB . If you're trying to get it onto something portable you'll either need a converter or you'll need to buy something to rip it.

There's plenty of free media players that support VOBs, though.

CLADS no doubt only as good as DVDDECRYPTER >>> cladDVD .NET 3.5.7 Updated: 3 Jun 2005 its quite dated now :(

so as above with latest ENCRYPTION such as ARcoSS it will fall over and  ARcoSS along with other newer protection schemes is getting more common place as well as different ARcoSS varients and updates    ANYDVD program is getting to the stage where theres more than one update per month to keep up :(

as far as free players VIDEOLAN or VLC player freeware... will quite happily play most if not ALL video formats  :)

@ Hi  can you tell me what video format you want to convert to and from that will be easier  :)

usually if your starting with DVD, most of the time you will need to rip to vob format first then convert from there as thats how MOST programs work :)

when converting to other formats a variety of programs can be used ... what is your intended use for the end result !?  ... playback on the ds or other !?

I have used cloned dvd mobile a few times to go from dvd to generic divx (avi) with great success. Not free but you can find it as a torrent easily. or download the trial and buy it. does many formats.

edit: you will need anydvd also to get past the encryption (with ease).
