Well Sony finally unveiled a new version of there hand held PSP unit. The new PSP is thinner, lighter, and has a TV out put connection allowing you to play PSP games and UMD movies on your tv set. They also claim UMD load times will be faster. Contrary to rumors there is no hard drive in the new PSP.

The unit will come in a silver (as well as black) color along with a 1 gig memory card and the game Daxter, and retail at $200.

There will also be a white Star Wars version that has a pic of Darth Vader on the back and comes with the new Star Wars Battle Front game as well as a 1 gig memory stick and a $200 price tag.

The older model PSP's will still be sold and remain at the $169 price tag.

Dont have one yet. It literally looked EXACTLY the same as the original PSP but I guess it is supposed to be thinner. The screen and buttons and overall design all remain the same.

I agree with you, but I can already feel myself leaning towards buying the revision. (even though I have the original.)

There are so many things with the original PSP hardware design that could use fixing such as:

1.  Location of power switch.  My right palm rests on it and sometimes slowly moves it so that my system will turn off in the middle of a game.
2.  The battery cover can sometimes work its way loose as I hold the system.  It should use a screw instead of a flimsy plastic clip.
3.  The D-pad is absolutely horrible.  A smaller pad with quicker response would be great.
4.  The thumb nub is in a bad position.
5.  A second thumb nub could be added on the right for newer games (which of course could revert back to the old config for older gen PSPs).
6.  Face buttons need a lighter touch just like the D-pad.
7.  The UMD door is pretty flimsy and doesn't sit flush on my system.
8.  Square edges could possibly make the system more comfortable to hold.
9.  Power jack is in a terrible position right near where you hold the system.  The L-shaped plug gets stuck on the bottom of the system.
10.  Open-face screen design is bad, bad, bad.  A flip cover would do wonders for the portability of the system.  Instead we're stuck with massive cases that add weight and bulk to the PSP just so we can try and protect the screen.

In spite of all the renewed hope for Sony, it seems that they have become stubborn or apathetic about the PSP.  This new revision is really a half-assed effort at best.

I'm looking at the price.  They finally dropped it to the still too high $169 a few months ago, and now you can't purchase rev 2 for less than $200?  Nintendo did the right thing going from DS original to DS lite: the Lite got the original's price ($150 I believe) and the original went to $129, IIRC.

Big time. This is a complete disappointment.

If I didn't have a PSP already, I might get one of these. At least for $30 dollars more you get a slighly(very slightly) thinner PSP, and a 1GB card. So the included memory card is nice. But why would I want to play PSP games on my tv? That doesn't make sense at all.

All in all, Sony is becoming a joke.

And you know the smaller unit probably cost less to make then the bigger one, lol. I have a feeling that Sony is running low on funds seeing how much money they are loosing company wide (Playstation 3 especially) and they could not afford to really redesign the unit by adding a hard drive, xtra analog stick, ect. I think they are hoping alot of their install base from the original PSP will buy the "new" "updated" version like all the DS guys did. I have a feeling there wont be long lines and sell outs for the "new" PSP like there were for the DS Lite.

Good point about the DS Lite.  A lot of DS Phat owners (myself included) felt compelled to upgrade to the DS Lite.  I don't see the same thing happening with the new PSP.

The idea is apparently popular, hence the existence of the Super Gameboy for the SNES and the Gameboy Player for the GCN.  People like being able to use a larger screen.  It's also easier to share between two people than a small PSP screen.

Yep, I got my Lite on launch day. I had to have it. And when it was first announced, I wasn't that impressed with it. But then I found about how bright and clear those screens were going to be, and I knew I had to have it. Plus that bigger stylus is excellent too. And the redesign is great. The original feels like a brick compared to it. So maybe if I actually held the new PSP in my hands, I would be more impressed. But really, they could have done something with that terrible D-Pad at least.

And yeah, I guess I could see that. Maybe Killzone Liberation would be kind of cool on a tv, or even Crush. I never got the Gameboy player for the Gamecube, but I wouldn't mind having it. I would like to play Fire Emblem on my tv. So I guess I can see how some people could be excited about this.
