For those who don't know Radiohead has dropped their record label and has decided to try a new approach, pay what you think the album is worth! Thats right, you get to LEGALLY download  a 160kbs DRM FREE copy of the new cd and you pay what ever price you feel they deserve for the new cd. If you feel it's worth $10 then you pay $10, ect, if you feel it's not worth a single penny, you don't pay a single penny! In December they will be releasing a box set for the new cd that you can buy that will include the following:

QuoteTHIS CONSISTS OF THE NEW ALBUM, IN RAINBOWS, ON CD AND ON 2 X 12 INCH HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL RECORDS. A SECOND, ENHANCED CD CONTAINS MORE NEW SONGS, ALONG WITH DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND ARTWORK. THE DISCBOX ALSO INCLUDES ARTWORK AND LYRIC BOOKLETS. ALL ARE ENCASED IN A HARDBACK BOOK AND SLIPCASE.

THE ALBUM DOWNLOAD AUTOMATICALLY COMES WITH THIS PACK. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE FILE DIGITALLY FROM THE 10TH OCTOBER 2007.

DISCBOXES ARE BEING MADE TO ORDER AND ARE PRICED AT £40.00 INCLUDING POSTAGE. SHIPPING WILL BEGIN ON OR BEFORE 3RD DECEMBER 2007.

Oasis, Nine Inch Nails, and  Jamiroquai have also dropped their record labels and are looking into doing the same thing or something similar if this works out. The record industry is literally craping themselves, lol. Here is a quote from one record producer that pretty much sums it all up:

QuoteLabels can still be influential and profitable by focusing on younger acts that need their muscle to get radio play and placement in record stores â€" but only if the music itself remains a saleable commodity. "That's the interesting part of all this," says a producer who works primarily with American rap artists. "Radiohead is the best band in the world; if you can pay whatever you want for music by the best band in the world, why would you pay $13 dollars or $.99 cents for music by somebody less talented? Once you open that door and start giving music away legally, I'm not sure there's any going back."

If your into Radiohead then get there new album (drm free) here: http://www.inrainbows.com/  And be sure to at least give the band SOMETHING in return if you like the album, or changes in the way we get music will never happen.

Yeah, I figured this was a worthy cause and preordered it when it was announced.  Got the email and the mp3s today.  I paid $8 or something (can't remember exactly) because i knew it would be worth at least that.

I even used to tend to buy t-shirts and stuff because I knew the bands actually made money from merch... If all bigger bands would do this with their music, I'd buy a lot more of it.

kkan

got mine today digital download for 0.00p the page kept crashing over and over and over prolly due to server overload it wouldnt take my £6.00 meh even for that price if it had took it its a bargain :)

I say VIVA LA RADIO HEADS for taking the innovative approach to this idea :)

but would say this much if people actually dontated a reasonable price they would/should at least get an extra track or video for their loyalty  :)

interesting idea..... it may work with the odd experimental album, but i doubt it will work if every album worked like this

TBH, i cannot see why it wouldn't work. The only issue is radio play, and many bands unless you like disney pop stuff-ish don't get played on top 40 stations anyways.

This could revolutionize cd purchasing or should i say destroy it for the better.

kkan

It's already out on torrent forums so even giving it away at a rock bottom price hasnt stopped it getting out there by the usual means of illegal distribution :(

DeVS

But it's not illegal anymore. The RIAA can't sue anyone for downloading or sharing this because no record label has it's unreasonable EULA or DRM all over it. This is the first cd that it does not matter HOW you get it or how you USE it, the only thing that matters is if you like it, pay the band, if you think it sucks, don't pay.

i think it would be just a little bit TOO easy to just download music, i mean, eventually i think the system would break down, with people just downloading stuff for the sake of downloadings it, and only paying a small amount for a large amount of music (many albums)

however, its not like bands get much more than pence for an average cd bought in a shop, so the bands may end up with more money anyway !

The thing is these artists are already established and are so because of exposure from being part of an RIAA label, so I don't see this as a new business model for selling music. Still cool, though.

Ya but things are changing. Look at the Arctic Monkey's, they had no label at all and got famous and sold a few millions cd's because of the internet alone. They now get radio play, ect. They did it all without a label. Granted the real "Big" bands had to use a record label because 5 to 10yrs ago it was the only way, thats no longer the only way. iTunes wants all of it's music DRM free too so iTunes also could (and probably will) play a big role in all of this.

I tried getting it from the official website, but it is too slow and asks too many personal questions. I ended up getting it off thepiratebay. ;D Will pay later if I think it is worth it.

BTW, this is by no means the first album to be distributed this way. See Wikipedia Albums free for download by copyright owner.

news reports say some people paid upto £100 for it and some £40 to get extra content including special editions on cd and Vinyl  :)

and lyrics :)

i think this is a top idea  :smitten:

Ok i personally don't like radio head but what they are doing is fantastic, as a poster above said they only get so many penny's/cent's per cd on the record label but if only 1 in 5 pay for this new album say £5/$9 then they are still better off!

I would pay for stuff if an artist i liked started this such as bon jovi/def leppard and thats saying some thing for me cause i usually just get my music 4 free but with this trust thing i would have to pay.

Hope this wrecks the record labels cause they are just a bunch of greedy B*****DS anyway!

but what if they want to make a video, or advertise, or organise a show

If they're using the Internet to sell music couldn't they use the same sites to advertise or organize a show? Besides that a lot of times the record companies make the artist pay them back for the promotion anyway.
