Perhaps a new power supply unit will help you.  I'm puzzled as to why you would run out of molex connectors. :idiot2:

I havn`t run out of molex connecters. I never had any in the first place as my mobo is SATA and the drive I want to fit is IDE, which uses different power connections. A new power supply wont help I think as drives get power from the mobo normally.
Thanks anyway

You would be correct, assuming a SATA drive.  But on IDE, power is from the molex cable not from the mobo.  So, I think an extra psu will still do the trick.

Get a converter; converts a molex style power connection to a SATA style one. Shouldn't be more than a few pounds / dollars.

That's a bit of a pisser!

As with the last post, it is fairly easy to fine a molex to sata converter (£0.99 on e-buyer), but the other way round is tricky. Why aren't they selling the cable in with the adapter?

driller66

Anton, excuse my ignorance but if I get a new psu do I replace the one I`ve got or do I get an extra one? If so how do I fit it please?
SATA drive to IDE is easy to find but the other way round is a nightmare, console manufacturers make thier products backward compatible but it seems now SATA is here IDE has been forgotten. It all moves so fast.

just been on the phone to ebuyer, they are sending me one of these.

male 4 pin to dvd drive and male 15 pin to PSU. think I may have cracked it. fingers crossed.
I will let you know as I`1m sure others may need this in future.

For me, it's kind of hard to visualize the problem since in my country, IDE is still very much alive and kicking.  About the PSU, quite literally, it is possible to make the PC work with two PSUs.  It's a weird setup for sure, but it's all possible.  You could replace the original PSU with your new one, but what I'm confused here is that, is your PSU a SATA kind of PSU?  I'm at a loss.

I dont know about that e-buyer product; I had had a look previously, and it seems to me to be a molex to SATA converter. Finger crossed anyway but, at this rate, you could have bought a new DVD drive (unfortunately, it probably would not have worked for your purposes!).

I just spoke to the local computer upgrade shop (a fairly big operation) and they too have not seen a SATA to molex converter. They certainly aren't on e-bay.

Just found this- doesn't look good! I assume it may be the same for DVDs

I tried to order a custom made cable with an adapter so I could use my PCI-E to power some Molex powered hard drives. But, the tech wrote me back with the following:

"Your PCI-E rails only provide +12V. A hard drive also requires +5V. You
should consider having your power supply modulated and just having custom
cables made for each of the molex lines. That would be the best way."

So apparently the molex have both +12v and +5v pins. The PCI-E only has the +12V. Which would explain why you can convert it in one direction but not the other

The sata connectors are just crimped on style, so ive ordered some crimp on molex, and im just going to swap them, and yes ill make sure i get the voltages the right way around.

Actually, looks like they do exist
