Bit late for you, but there is this all in one

Seeing as this is so difficult, it's cheaper for me to buy a new drive!

anton

As long as you got it all worked out.  Great.
Universal Slot-2 DS Patch Settings:

Fexo thanks for that mate, I have just paid for a sata drive now.
Its an LG/Hitachi gdr H10N model, I believe this will work for my purpose, anyone confirm this for me?
If not I will order both those items you posted and see where I end up then.
Many thanks to all who have helped so far, I will let you know how it pans out.

Oh, well.......

I just don't like to be beaten on these things and I had a lot of waiting time yesterday.

I hope the drive does the business! Best of luck.

driller66

Seems you havn`t been beaten yet fexo, the drive i got gdr h10n does not work.
opened rawdump and detected wii disc but whern i started dump it cam up with error; you may have a faulty drive.
I have tried the drive for normal reading of discs etc and its fine.
Maybe this type of drive does not work as assumed.
back to the drawing board I`m afraid.

I actually downloaded the ripping programme myself to see if it would work with the LG RAM drives that I have, but I had the same error message [the Wii isn't modded- it was just for interest].

Maybe it's back to e-bay and more expense!!

I have found a way round it for now, but its hardly ideal.
I have put my lg 8162b into an old system I have been using to run a MAME cabinet.
It only has a 10 gig hd though so I can only do one disc and then have to put the iso onto an external hd plugged into usb, as
i have no burner in this system, I have yet to see if I can burn it on my new system though, or wether it picks up some errors in the
transfer over.
It turns out also that 2 of my SATA connections on my mobo do not work, I have got a dell tecnician coming out on Monday to fix this.
I will try and bribe the bloke into helping me put my 8162b drive into my system.
If he does it I will be able to tell you how it all works.

Well heres an update....
I got the adapter from ebuyer, and one from cdl. Both seemed to fit the connections, power was going to the dvd drive as it opened ok when I started the system. However the system wouldn`t recognise the drive at all, went into bios and it didnt notice the drive at all, searched for new hardware in the wizard from control panel...no luck there either. I get the feeling its not compatible and no matter how many adapters I buy it just isn`t going to work. I bought a sata dvd drive, LG GDR H10N as it was posted in another thread that this worked, sadly it doesn`t. Any other sata drives that definitely work that anyone knows about?
Fexo help me please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It ought to be recognised- but you do have a Dell so who knows!

First of all, have you got the latest Bios version?- I had quite a few problems on the old one before I did an update.

Second, there is a new, much superior Dell Support Centre (I downloaded it yesteday) for your machine which will detect everything you have got.

First of all, check that these two are up to date and see if the device is recognised; after that the thinking caps have to go on!

I forgot to ask; can you see it if you go into "my computer", right click properties, "hardware", DVD/rom drives?

driller66

No mate, no sign of the drive being recognised at all anywhere.
The Bios is updated as I had a new mobo fitted by a dell engineer a few days ago. and i have the new dell support on my system too.
The only thing I can think of is that the IDE connecter I got maybe doesn`t do what its supposed too.
I connected both the wires to it and the power one to the drive but nothing.
Think I may have to get someone in to look at it for me, god knows who lol
Just have to fit it back into my mame cabinet for now.
Thanks for all the help.

Daft question, but have you actually checked the BIOS?

The Dells have the option (I don't know if other BIOS do as well) of disabling the SATA connection. You need to go into the BIOS under drives and check that the SATA connection is ON- sounds stupid that it isn't automatic but....

At work here I just have a cheap C521 which only has 2 SATA connections to the motherboard, so both are automatically on. I will check at home tonight on the home machine which has 4 connectors and see what the situation is there.

driller66

there isn`t an option to turn the sata connections on or off mate, they automatically pick up on anything you plug into them as I re-arranged the drives to check this and they all work.
BIOS doesn`t give you an option, you cant highlight them in BIOS.
