Hi all, going to order a pre-mooded wii with wiikey installed.
I think i know how to make back-ups but I keep reading about updates etc,
Is it all as confusing as it sounds?
I have had a chipped ps2 for years and that was easy to make back-ups for.
is it just a case of plug it in, put the disc in and play?
any advice would be appreciated.

If you want to dump original games, you need an LG drive and some software to dump it into iso.

Once you have acquired an iso of a game, I suggest using ImgBurn and a good blank DVD-R (I suppose +R will work too) and just simply burn the iso into the disc.

To configure your Wiikey, download the wiikey config disc from wiikey's website and burn that into a DVD-R (using ImgBurn).  Boot it on your Wii.  It will be recognized as a GC disc.  Note, there are config discs that require a GC controller and there are those that can be operated using the Wii Remote.

For the Wiikey firmware update, download it from wiikey's website.  You can use filechop and expand it to fit 1.4 GB  (GC game sized) image.  When you boot the firmware update, Wii will read it as a GC game.  Boot it, and it will do a test for the firmware update by pressing A (GC controller).  If that is successful, press A again to perform the actual update.  Then press A again to boot back to the Wii menu.

Known Wiikey FW updates:
1.9b - (GC Audio Stream Fix)
1.9g (Galaxy Beta Hotfix)
Note: Super Mario Galaxy has a new copy protection built in and it's advised you update the wiikey firmware version to 1.9g if you want to play (I suggest updating wiikey firmware before ever inserting Galaxy).

wow, not straightforward is it?
I have an lg8162b drive for reading and i understand any burner will do for creating the back-up.
as the wii is premodded should i ask if its had the firmware updates already?
suppose i ought to get on ebay and get a GC controller too?
thanks for your help.

where'd you end up getting the chipped Wii from?  How much was it?

Thanks.

Well, it wasn't straightforward beginning with Galaxy.  It would be a good idea to ask if they updated the firmware for you (chances are, they haven't).  GC controller is a good idea, I think because most of the first disc releases use the GC controller.

Most games should be as simple as burn and play.  For Galaxy, read the info on the forum threads to get a good grasp of how to go about it.  Any burner should be able to burn the backup.

And make sure you do not update the Wii firmware with the firmware from another region.

US NTSC Wii with PAL Wii firmware update is a no-no.  PAL Wii with US NTSC Wii firmware update is also a no-no.  You can brick your Wii that way.

just attempted to put my lg8162b drive into my new pc.
oh dear, new pc has sata connections and drive is ide.
just searched pcworldpartmaster.com for an adapter and found this
http://www.partmaster.co.uk/cgi-bin/product.pl?PID=1072846&brand=&model=&part=ide%20to%20sata%20connector
does anyone know if this will wprk? Its £25 with delivery, how much will a new drive cost me and can you get them with sata connections?
thanks for any help in advance.

kkan

yes should work fine... altho even with a SATA drives setup the board should still have IDE connectors have you looked all over the board to see if it does indeed have IDE sockets on the board :)

anton

kkan is right.  Most SATA mainboards also have IDE connectors.  Check your mainboard manuals.

Just been intouch with dell, my motherboard doesn`t have any IDE connections, so i need a sata drive that works.
Anyone know where i can get one from and what model works best?
Thanks for all the help so far,
perserverance is the key word lol

I am puzzled by this.  Excluding IDE is a bold move by any motherboard manufacturer.  :idiot2:
I am still under the impression it should have one, but if you're asking for a sata drive that works, I am not entirely sure.  Others may have a better idea.  Sorry.  :-[

This is much cheaper, and I will be getting one once I place another order with them to get free delivery.

You can also get them from e-bay, but make sure that it is "out" or 2-way; many of the ones on e-bay are for a SATA drive to connect to an IDE MB.

I also have a SATA-only Dell and want to put my IDE LG RAM drive in there so I can read my old disks.

I've got a Dell system without any legacy PATA connections too, its something they've been doing for a while.  I don't see anything wrong with it myself ;) Can't remember if it comes with a floppy connector. I hope not.

Let's face it, all of the Dell motherboards are bespoke rather than standard configurations; I was going to put an old P4 Dell system into my daughters (pink) I-Tee case and it was only after taking the Dell apart that I discovered that everything was non-standard so I could only re-use the components.

I suspect that the reason for this is due to their cooling systems which are very efficient and quiet- clearly what is needed in an office environment.

I now buy my machines from ITCSales, which has "scratched" Dell machines at huge savings (certainly a lot cheaper than the Dell outlet on e-bay). I would normally build my own system, but it is impossible to do it for these prices.

this item is on ebay.
It says it will convert sata to ide
and sata to pata.
do you think it will work?
thanks

This one looks correct

This is a 2 way, so you have to move the switch over depending whether you want to use it on a HD/DVD or on the MB.

Hope that this helps.

Depending on the size of your case, you should make a choice, as the first one looks longer.

Be careful of the second; it looks like a drop-ship with 10 days delivery!
