Where did you/ or which did you use for IOS 60.wad?

I'm not sure what you are asking me.  I installed "IOS 60.wad" with "WAD Manager".

I downloaded it here . . .
How To Install System Menu v4.0!
ULTIMATE Tutorial for everything you need for System Menu 4.0

I don't know if this stuff works (or is safe) with your chipped Wii. It should be fine if you follow the tutorials I posted.

What version of Wii firmware are you running, 4.0U, 3.4U, 3.2U or other?

you answered it, i see that it was attached to the link you provided. I wasn't looking for it for me, just wanting to know what/where it came from as it was not on the "dummies" link.

Thanks.

It should be said that the latest Wii CANNOT be modded as the Boot 2 seems to have been changed - there is a specific code for these models and it is well documented. There are, however, over 45 million Wiis out there, so this could have a big impact!

kkan

soft modded our wii over the last 2 days myself but pretty much winged it with bits of guides here and there and now seen this guide sooner!!! LOL!

BUT ...using BANNERBOMB and the bootmii install as a safe measure it was pretty straight forward :)

got stuck as to why it was not loading backups (from dvds as I dont have a hd to hand yet) then figured it all by reading more I had mess about a lot more with downgrading IOS files etc!

this guide with the AIO saves a lot of headaches!

Exactly, there are over 45 million Wii's in the wild that are now software hackable using the BannerBomb method. However Wii models LU64/65 are a problem, and Bannerbomb should not be attempted on those systems at this time. Check your Wii serial numbers.

Will this work with current firmware v4.0. I just update my wii about a week ago to the current version from nintendo. I'm new to this and not sure about softmodding my wii.

Yes, the latest version of Wii Softmodding for Dummies and the included AIO kit should have your 4.0 Wii up and running Homebrew and Wii backups quickly.

Definitely a good guide...I too wish I had found this before using the bits and pieces on the net that I had to find last night. At least mine is softmodded as well.

One thing tho...this guide does not seem to mention the firmware version you need to start the process. The pictures indicate that it is a 3.3 system, and bannerbomb is supposed to work with 4.0...but who knows. It *should* work fine in 4.0 (and probably does), but I would love to hear someone who had 4.0 vanilla and used it...and their experience. Additionally, I would love to hear the experience of downgrading from 4.0 to 3.2 or some lesser firmware as well. I lucked out and purchased a brand new Wii last night that had 3.4U, so I am unsure completely if I would have the following success had it been 4.0.

I used a slightly different tutorial which included a downgrade firmware option which brought me back to 3.2U. I did that specifically so that I can use Starfall, which does certain important things like adding a failsafe boot, blocking updates from discs, making the system region free, and some non important (but good) things like removing the health and safety screen and the very annoying jingle music heard when in the main menu of the system. You need 3.2 to use it however, which is why it was necessary to downgrade as first step.

I then installed cIOS36 rev10 and ran a backup or two with the Gamma backup launcher. DVD+R discs will not work on the Wii from what I can tell. I went back out and bought a spindle of DVD-R's...problem solved :)

I tested SDUSB v1.5 and did a few things as well:

Backed up the Wii included "Wii Sports" to an SD card and ran it from there
Copied the same backup to a 500GB USB HD and ran it from there
Copied a few other ISOs to the same HD and ran those too

Absolutely the best experience hack-wise since the Dreamcast. And this time around I needed nothing but a Wii and an SD card to make it all happen :)

The screenshots haven't been updated in the latest 4.0 Dummies guide. The older Dummies guide used the Twilight Hack only worked with 3.4 and below. BannerBomb works with any Wii firmware 4.0 and below. (other than models with SN# LU64/65)

If you are a Starfall fan and you are happy with your softmod configuration then that's all that matters.  :)

I started with 3.4U as well. I'm now running Hombrew enabled Wii firmware 4.0U including Nintendo's latest SD management tools. I can run VC-Wiiware directly from SD/SDHC. I can load Wii backups from SDHC memory, USB flashdrive, or USB harddrive.  I can run DVD+R backups of both Wii and Gamecube games. I can play both US and EU backups so I guess I'm region free. I have no problems playing online. Disk updates are blocked.

I don't have "failsafe boot" or the Health and Safety warning disable feature.

I use DVD+R (Maxell) disks just fine.  You might need to set your DVD burner booktype to DVD-ROM.

I definitely agree. I'm also blown away with how efficient and well organized Wii homebrew is delivered with Homebrew Browser.   ;D

zektor

Yeah. I looked into the change in booktype and it would have worked to use DVD+R, but because my drive is a specific Pioneer burner, the change is unfortunately not allowed :( Well, at least DVD-R works fine :)

Thanks for the v4.0 info btw. I have downloaded the files and tutorial and stored them in a safe place just in case I feel like updating down the road :) I do have some q's tho:

What blocks the disk updates? Part of the Waninkoko firmware patch?

How does the VC games from card work? Just copy a wad to the card and play?

Thanks again!

Well, several things are protecting me at the moment. I'm running the latest firmware 4.0 so >>current<< disk updates will not try to upgrade my system. I have WiiConnect24 turned off to prevent Nintendo from updating my system while I sleep. I use WiiBrickBlocker to remove disk updates from ISOs I burn to DVD+R. I use WBFS Manager 3.01 to remove disk updates from ISOs I copy to my USB devices.

No, first I have to load VC/Wiiware WADs into Wii system memory using WAD manager. Once they are put in Wii system memory then I can use the Nintendo SD/SDHC management tools to MOVE them out of system memory into a special directory called private on my SD/SDHC memory card. After that I can always launch my VC/Wiiware directly from the SD/SDHC.  This frees up tons of Wii system memory and allows me to launch as many VC/Wiiware titles that I can fit on my SDHC memory card. This works with titles I've downloaded from the Nintendo store as well as trucha signed VC/Wiiware that I've download from the internet.

I found a patcher for System Menu 4.0 called StartPatch that provides many of the features of Starfall . . .

- Region free
- Region free channels
- skip disc check update
- No health check
- no bg music
- move disc channel

I haven't tested this yet but it can be downloaded here . . .
StartPatch v4.0

(warning StartPatch 4.0 is only for use with System Menu 4.0)

My serial on my WII is #LU557... Is my wii hackable for  Softmodding. I just want to make sure before I start. Just don't want to brick my Wii.

Yes, the latest version of Wii Softmodding for Dummies and the included AIO kit should have your 4.0 Wii up and running Homebrew and Wii backups quickly. I understand you don't want to brick your Wii. Just make sure you follow the instructions and make sure your Wii doesn't lose power during the softmod process.
