Daft question; with the YABA wad is it possible to get the cover art displayed? I can seem to figure this one out (though it may be that I am on the rev 9 cIOS). I have it in usb-loader/covers but nothing shows.

Yes, the latest version of Wii Softmodding for Dummies and the included AIO kit should have your 4.0 Wii up and running Homebrew and Wii backups quickly. I understand you don't want to brick your Wii. Just make sure you follow the instructions and make sure your Wii doesn't lose power during the softmod process.

UPDATE:

Looks like people with "virgin" Wii firmware 4.0 are having problems with the latest v4 version of Wii Softmodding for Dummies. Don't worry there is a workaround.  The auther promises to update his Dummies guide soon.

The workaround requires jump starting the install process with LoadMii . . .

. . . les35 told me my guide was not working as written for Wii with firmware 4.0

I can confirm "Softmodding for Dummies v4.0" DOES NOT work on 4.0U Wii.

I tried to use the latest pack (v4.0) and instructions earlier today on a virgin Wii with firmware 4.0U. The Wii I was trying it on had never been touched by any other homebrew application/installer. The step which tried to install IOS16 and CIOS249 failed.

I ended up following the instructions HERE until and including the step "Install the CIOSv7.wad". After that I followed the "Softmodding for Dummies" from start to finish and it worked.

So basically I used the bannerbomb exploit to load LoadMii, which I then used to downgrade IOS35.
I then used LoadMii to load Wad Manager 1.4
Inside Wad Manager 1.4, I selected to use IOS35 and installed cIOS35 (or it might have been IOS35?). (By default Wad Manager 1.4 selected to use IOS36, but that failed for me.)
I then used Wad Manager 1.4 to install CIOSv7.wad
I then created a fresh "Softmodding for Dummies" SD card and followed the instructions from the beginning. The only thing that was different from the instructions was that the first step said IOS16 and CIOS249 were already installed.

Thought the idea was to use BANNERBOMB and HACKMII installer with v4 upwards (until the next update)

I was quoting the author above. I haven't used HackMii before. Is that what you used?

well ... not on v4 on 3.4E but reading over on GBATEMP afaik can tell that you can use BannerBomb and Hackmii  (hackmii = bootmii + a few basic tools to install HBC from the start of the Bannerbomb exploit)

http://hackmii.com/ has more info ... but this is from their page

We are proud to present HackMii Installer v0.1.  This is one executable that can install the Homebrew Channel and DVDX on any Wii, with any System Menu version.  It can be used with Comex’s BannerBomb on System Menu 4.0, or on our Twilight Hack on earlier versions, or through the Homebrew Channel or any other method to run homebrew software on your Wii.

I used bootmii instead of the Twilight hack mainly because you don't have to go out and try track down a real copy of the game ....bootmii with the hackmii files ... then you need is your SD card ..and most people have an SD card kicking around from an old camera or something :)

once Homebrew channel is installed you can get most of the other stuff done by using Wadmanager and installing the wads you need etc (read extensively over on GBATEMP and take notes if your not using the AIO here! as it can be quite fiddly)

AIO seems to be the way to go with Bootmii as it does all the dirty work of IOS patching ...my only grumble is the backup loader it installs is a bit crappy and does not load some of the newer games you are maby better off using the NEOGAMMA with #200 fix loader  (look on gbatemp for the WAD version to have it installed as a channel ;) )

Also I don't have the Disk Dumper channel installed ... Don't see the point in tying the wii up for 2 hours or more to dump the disk via WIFI :(

The AIO installs Autoboot Gamma BackupLauncher channel Wii-ish style V.2 002 FIX by NeoRame.
It works perfectly with backups I've tried including MADWORLD.

No problem.  Game covers go inside a folder called "usb-loader/covers" in the root of your SD card. The file name must be the same as the game ID with a .PNG extension. If you are using WBFS Manager for windows you can simply copy the PNGs from the "My Documents/WBFS Manager Covers" folder to the "usb-loader/covers" folder on your SD memory card.

lol in that case they need to catch up on the guide and replace some of the images the loader show in the guide it shows an older loader channel that I tried previously when looking for and installed channel version and it wouldn't boot punchout or madworld for me !?

although maby if i had used the AIO it would of worked !? ..who knows lol ...not going to go backwards and retest as its all working great now lol :P

will test the AIO fully on the next Wii I get to mess around with ;)

As for the covers, that's how I have them. I suspect it is a V9 cIOS problem. Maybe I'll do V10 and see if that cures it.

They do work fine with other usbloaders. I'm looking at trying out one of the sexy interfaces that has just been released with the rotating covers  (can't rember the name though!).

Edit:

Upgraded to V10 and no change. I tried using "Cover Flow" which looks fantastic, but I couldn't get any games to run. However, I downloaded the covers that I needed and these work with the YABA channel, so I just need to use Coverflow for the images (I now think that it may have been a size problem, but we all know that's not important......)

This is what I use. Gamma 0.3g. It is a channel-ized version that seems to work just fine with any backup I have thrown at it. Was just playing Punchout on it a few minutes ago :)

x64 is used if your pc is 64bit.

x86 is used if it is 32bit,.... you most likely are wanting this.

I'm trying to install softmod but I'm getting error when trying to install iso16 error -1035. My wii is running 4.0u(update thru nintendo) and never been hack before. What I'm I doing wrong.

Nevermind, I figured it out. Thank you les35, your post solved my problem.
