I'm trying to install softmod but I'm getting error when trying to install iso16 error -1035. My wii is running 4.0u(update thru nintendo) and never been hack before. What I'm I doing wrong.

Nevermind, I figured it out. Thank you les35, your post solved my problem.

What was the fix to the problem? IOS Downgrader?

I believe it was the IOS Downgrader. After that,  was able to run Softmodding for Dummies.

I'm happy to read that you successfully got your Wii softmodded. Sorry if the 4.0 workaround for the Dummies guide caused any confusion. Hopefully that will be fixed soon.

Do I need to install preloader or is there one you can recommend that works better than preloader.

As far as I know StartPatch and Preloader are the only choices for use with 4.0 firmware.  I haven't installed either of them so I can't make a recommendation.  I've read Preloader does more things than StartPatch, but I also read Preloader is difficult to remove once it's installed.

Preloader resides in the same space as the system menu. So, basically re-installing the menu (or updating the firmware
) Will remove preloader.

I have preloader installed on my 3.2U system. I have yet to go to 4.0 only because everything is running perfectly right now. Maybe someday down the road...

I cannot install bootmii to boot2 unfortunately since my Wii is too new, so preloader is the best I can do for safety. Even still, it is pretty darn good.

I noticed Wii Softmodding for Dummies has been updated again. This latest AIO now includes LoadMii and IOS35 downgrader, so it should work with virgin 4.0 firmware. Also the AIO now includes SD/USB Loader Channel V1.5, so one less thing to download and install.  :)

Good call! Thanks for the info and update!

I am still surprised that the AIO is only including Gamma, but not Softchip....which I find to now be more compatible with DVD backups and has the nice feature of autostarting. Then again, loaders are becoming a thing of the past since USB. Still, I like to run DVD backups...or at least have the ability to :) Here's Softchip for anyone interested. Included is a channel version as well as a version for HBC.

you may not need to add one  ....

QuoteWii Backup Launcher (Autoboot Gamma channel Wii-ish style V.2 002 FIX by NeoRame

looks like its included with a channel ;)

I DVD backups at the minute a) because the only usb drive I have spare is my 500gb and that has my music and emulator collections on lol ;)

and

b) Cannot be bothered to mess about partitioning and setting the drive up its far easier to burn to disk ... and a hard copy is going to last maby longer anyhow ... thats my theory lol!

zektor

It was a tough choice to use my 500GB since it had every Dreamcast release on it, but I wiped it. What the hell, I never play those old games anymore anyway :) So, now I use the 500GB strictly for the Wii. I have 20 games on it so far and it only has 20GB used :)

As for the loader, yeah, Gamma is good too. I use Softchip most of the time, but keep Gamma loaded as well if ever I find something that is not compatible with Softchip. I do have to say that this has not happened as of yet tho :) Softchip is just a leaner, quicker DVD launching experience I think.

Even tho I use the HD 99% of the time, I still like the ability to boot DVD-R's, which is why I also burn them. Never know if the HD will die on me someday, and it would be a shame to loose all of the games. Backups are key :)

I have seemed to use the HD 100% of the time now. Just so much more convenient. I would it if they would make the loader where we could boot back into the loader from a launched game like we can with the DS.

Well, I modded a brand new wii again tonight for someone (just purchased..serial #LU63xxxxxx) and all worked well except for a few things:

I moved it to v4.0 for the heck of it and it worked perfectly. Next I installed preloader as I have come to enjoy the features and it is said that it does work in 4.0. Well, it does NOT. It nearly bricked the Wii. Luckily I could still access the preloader menu, but the system menu was GONE. I was able to get into the HBC and downgrade, then upgrade again and get it up and running. Word of warning, stay AWAY from preloader on v4.0U. As a matter of fact, the whole business left such a bad taste in my mouth that I think I will never use preloader again.

Startpatch on the other hand is excellent. It works perfectly on v4.0U (used v4.0.3 USA version) and I was able to stop the BGM menu music, stop updates, region free the machine, stop the health/safety screen and all that. This is perfectly safe. The only risk you would possibly have is to run into a power failure while installing startpatch...which only takes a few seconds so it is a very slim chance. Even slimmer than having a power failure during an official update :) It ONLY works in v4.0 FYI.

I have pretty much streamlined the whole 4.0U upgrade with cIOS, cMIOS, channels, etc etc to such a degree that I may put together a guide myself one day soon :)

For DeVS

If you use "Coverflow" and hit the home button on the remote it gives the option of going to the Wii menu or the loader (HBC) menu.

All we need is a Wad for it and things would be great as it is a nice sexy interface.

ALSO, the games seem to be working fine now (don't know why) but it occasionally siezes up on loading.

Ya but I was wanting to go back into loader not just HBC. No hassle, just lazyness, lol.

NO ....LAZINESS IS:- When your like me you have a DVB card in your desktop computer that you sit in front of most of the time and have a REMOTE control to work it from about 4 inches away lol! :P
