Quote from: "edge808"I have a possible brick problem as well.

I opened my ds and put the battery the wrong way.  I didn't power it on or anything but I'm pretty sure I shorted it. It then showed the same symptoms as the one bitblt described.

Checked and found f2 to be busted, soldered it.

The unit charges now but when i power it up, the green led and the touchscreen powers up then shuts down again.

I'm out of ideas... :(

Double check your ribbon connectors.  Make sure the ribbons are seated all the way in the connectors.  I've seen this happen before and adjusting the ribbons helped.

You should watch the first part of this video if you are confused . . .

ok i double checked my ribbons, turns out my top ribbon was loose.

unfortunately while fixing the two smaller ribbons at the bottom, one of the locks broke. i thought i could go without it but when i tested it, same thing only this time it's the top lcd the lights up before shutting down again...

is that ribbon lock critical?

That is a real bummer about the lock breaking.  You still might be able to get the ribbon to make proper contact and then use some electrical tape to secure the ribbon.  I don't know how well that will work. Your best bet now is to get a new mainboard on eBay or someplace.

Ok i have ds with exactly same problem. Im replaced F2 with wire. F1 is ok. Now my batery is charging but when im power on ds nothing hapens. When im disconect bottom screen ds power ups but after while its go off.

Can you try with a different battery?

ghostek

No i dont have another battery but im check mine with digital multimeter and looks fine.

Im swap top and bottom screens now top screens power on i see light but after second ds power off. Now im think that one screen is broken. What do you think ?

bitblt

I still think it's a problem with one of the ribbons not seated correctly. I've seen this "shut off" problem happen before because of ribbons.

You could be correct though, it might be a bad LCD screen or mainboard. It helps to have a known working DS to test with.

ghostek

Ok im check it again but for now i have question for you. Im noticed when im put this big ribbons in slot i must use some force. When im put small ribbons im use force but ribbons only break. Its correct ?

bitblt

No need to use force. Just slightly move the ribbon back and forth and make sure it is seated all the way into the connector. You may notice the ribbon will go 1/4 mm further into the connector if you try. Carefully slide the ribbons locks back into place and test again.

Quote from: "bitblt"I suppose it's some standard 5.2 volt SMD fuse? I'm not sure how to find a new one. I think just bridging the fuse is adequate.  I even shorted my DS again after bridging the fuse and the DS didn't get damaged.

i don't usually quote 2+ year old posts :P

do you mean you shorted the sl1 or the sl1 with something else? i bridged the F2 on an old ds but just wondered what would happen if something gets shorted. i can't help thinking that fuse was there to protect something.

sinkhead

Well, protecting things is generally what they do. What they protect is your concern!

It will catch on fire and blow up like a 10 megaton bomb. lol Just kidding of course.

As a test I purposely grounded VCC as described in my first post. The DS didn't get damaged. I suppose if I had shorted VCC for a long period of time it might have caused permanent damaged.  Nintendo is probably required to put fuses in the DS for UL certification, and to prevent the possibility of malfunction causing battery discharge. I don't know.

the part about regulation does make sense.

i have some dilemma here. i was planning on selling it but i don't want it blowing up in someone's face or for it to mutate them somehow. i've already ravaged my donor units for all their worth!
