The unofficial guide of SAVING your DS LITE from becoming a BRICK

Please refer to http://www.monroeworld.com/ds/hacking/fig5_lite.jpg

KEY:

XXXX =plastic between the holes, only on top part, not on bottom

...... = empty space

( ) = SL1

@ = danger screw that  powers off ds, bricking it

____ = bottom of ds lite

                                                                                                        diagram:

XXXX.....XXXX.....XXXX

If you stick a toothpick through the plastic, the tin foil may get loose and hit the neighboring screw.

Also, if you slip and move the toothpick at an angle, it may hit the neighboring screw.

If you press straight down, you will have no problem.  Use something rigid. Cut a coat hanger 4 inches high to get a  long stiff rod;go down the SL1 hole perpendicular to the ds.  You may even want to use electric tape around the coat hanger so that only the very bottom part has metal exposed.

i dont get the diagram.  can u redo it in a drawring program or somthing?

I just figured if you get some cheap carboard ( the type kids use for school projects ) and cut a small piece out, roll it up so it make a tiny tube. slide it into the sl1 hole and let go . the cardboard would expand to the size of the sl1 hole shielding everyting around it.

so you would end up with a little tunnle all the way down to sl1 and no way of the device ur using to touch anything else.

Anyone think this would work?

Critical_Impact

I believe the diagram is a side on view of the ds. When he refers to the bottom of the ds he is refering to the actuall bottom. You would have to stick a screwdriver into one of the holes to short SL1

Let me take a stab at this....

Here is how it should be done.

And here is what happens when you're contorting yourself trying to see both the SL1 hole, the Flashme screen, and being scared crapless about bricking your DS.

So, the trick is .. be calm.  Be STRAIGHT IN with your shorting tool.  Use a mirror so you can see the flashme screen without flipping the unit over while trying to short.  BE CAREFUL.

i still think it will be easier to stick a rolled up piece of cardboard and leting it expand to the size of the sl1 hole so u cant touch the other sides.

in theory it sounds like it would work

darkuni

The problem is ... the hole is SO SMALL.  It looks HUGE on the pictures ... but if you can get cardboard in there, go for it!

I think if people study the DSlite PCB pictures, and look thoroughly inside the SL1 hole with plenty of light, they will better understand the problem.  Don't just poke around with a big wad of tin foil.

Some have removed the DS back cover exposing the PCB.  This makes SL1 very easy to see.  The problem with this idea is the battery needs to be taped into place to power up the DS, and that poses a risk.

The best solution would be a little plastic plunger device, the same size as the SL1 hole.  Someone could sell them on key-chains.

Let's produce them and make lots of money! We call it:

I think that's as good an idea as any.

That way any lateral movement should be OK.

I was thinking that a modified coat hanger might be the trick.  I'll have to experiment with it.

I'm hoping loopy will take my advice and add the audible indicator of flashing and a "simulation" mode to the flashme code so we can do it while taking our time, completely from the rear.

Another tip would be doing the flash infront of a mirror.
This way you can focus on and face the SL1 shorting, while still being able to see the screen.

If you try poking around at the SL1 while you're looking at the screen, the chances of screwing up are alot higher.

Just my two cents.

Another good idea is to use a precision flat head screwdriver. Leave it standing on a table in a up right position and have someone hold on to it firmly. And then just point the DS downwards with two hands, that way it would go down straight.

Just a thought.

Great advice jbull.

Two questions--what's this I hear about sparks flying off from the evil screw next to it when it shuts off?  Does it happen as a result of the turn off or cuase the turn off?

Mikeypr

How about Varnish/Painting side/top of the screwdriver so as to act as an insulator?

May work if you dont scratch it in the insertion process.
